So far during our Cloth Diapering 101 week, you’ve heard about the different types of cloth diapers available, why you should at least consider cloth diapers, answers to common misconceptions about cloth diapers, and two videos that show you how to use and clean them. Today, I’m going to review the cloth diaper brands I recommend.
This list is not exhaustive. There are many, many cloth diaper brands that do a great job, and have their superiority for any wide variety of reasons. But I don’t want to review something I haven’t actually tried, so today’s information is solely based on my personal experience. In the comments section, feel free to use similar criteria to add your $.02 about another brand you like.
The reviewed criteria are absorbency, cost, overall fit, drying time (on a clothesline), the cute factor, the company’s customer service, and Dad and Grandparent-friendliness. This last category is contributed by my husband, who rated each diaper based on his first-hand experience. Hesitant dads, grandparents, and other caregivers is a major consideration with cloth diapers, so it’s important to give honest feedback regarding a diaper’s ease of use.
I’ve rated the diapers in each category from one to five clothespins. Here are the definitions:

• Perfect Size Diaper from FuzziBunz (Pocket Diaper)

This is a great diaper from FuzziBunz. It’s the one we have the most quantity of, so we use one of these almost daily. They’re a cinch to snap, and the shape is great around the legs — we’ve never had a blow-out with one of these. My son is skinny, so the caboose is a little loose, but that means there’s plenty of room to add a doubler or extra insert at night. These are one of the fastest-drying diapers we have, and the customer service is wonderful. I’ve interacted with them a few times, and they’ve always responded very quickly to my emails. FuzziBunz is a great company.
I also love their other products I have. We use their hanging diaper pail, and we’ve never had an odor problem. After we wash it with the diapers, it dries really quickly. We carry their travel wet bag in our diaper bag, so the few times we’ve needed it, there’s never been a smell issue — you can’t tell anything’s in your diaper bag. This comes in handy in other ways, too, since it’s waterproof — our older daughter wet her underwear and jeans one time, and we just tossed them in there until we got home. It can also go in the wash.
I like their wipes, too. With their Organic Double-Sided Wipes, one side is cotton and the other side is a soft fleece. They work great for getting off poop, especially in combo with homemade diaper wipe solution.
Overall, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything by FuzziBunz.
• 3.0 One-Size Diaper from BumGenius (Pocket Diaper)

This is a great, quick-drying diaper that fits my trim baby really well. We’ve never had an explosion in this one, either, and the Aplix (super-strong velcro) stays put. I only have one of these diapers, but I’m happy every time I use it. The insert has snaps so that you can optionally shorten the insert and make it thicker in the front, which is great for a boy. And because you can adjust the size with the snaps in front, you only need one set of these diapers to last from birth to potty.
BumGenius is very popular with cloth diapering mamas, so even though it’s on the pricey side, you might be able to find secondhand diapers on the internet.
• Blueberry One-Size Bamboo Velour Diaper from Swaddlebees (Pocket Diaper)

This is quite the luxurious diaper from Swaddlebees! It’s easily adjustable for any size you need, and the inside is a super-soft organic bamboo cotton blend. The Aplix is really strong, too. The best thing about this diaper is the inserts — each diaper comes with two! One is smaller, for the really young age, and the second one is longer that snaps together as a trifold. You can use the smaller insert as a doubler at night, so you’ve essentially got four layers going on. Each layer is really thin but absorbent — this is often our nighttime diaper.
My only complaint is the cost. It’s one of the pricier pocket diapers out there, so if you’re interested in Swaddlebees, you could first look secondhand.
• Side Snapping Diaper from BottomBumpers (All-In-One Diaper)

BottomBumpers as more of a hybrid of a pocket and AIO, because BottomBumpers includes a soaker that snaps on top of the inside. It’s a double-folded, super-soft organic cotton padding topped with bamboo velour. It’s a breeze to snap in because you don’t even need to reach inside. But what I love best about these diapers is the fit — for my slim little man, these are the best-fitting diapers we have. They contour wonderfully between the legs, and the side snaps keep it nice and trim on the bottom.
Again, the only issue is the cost. But for an AIO, it’s not bad. And I love that I’m supporting a small cottage industry run by a mom.
• Bamboozle from Bummis (Fitted Diaper)

Oh my goodness, I love this diaper from Bummis. This diaper has four layers of bamboo, which means it’s compact yet super-absorbent. It is unbelievably soft! I love that a 100% bamboo is so eco-friendly — bamboo is a renewable resource with a very short growth cycle and it is grown without fertilizers or pesticides. Plus, it’s breathable, cool, and absorbs 60% more than cotton. This is one of our favorite diapers, and I’d have more if it weren’t for the cost. Still, I love how slim-fitting these diapers are. There’s absolutely no puffy bum here. He’s wearing this diaper under the Imse Vimse Organic Wrap photo, reviewed below.
• Organic Cotton Prefolds from Bummis (Prefold Diaper)

These are the prefolds that come with Bummis’ Organic Cotton Diaper Kit, a complete diapering system in a box. These unbleached prefolds are super absorbent and soft, and they’re a great size for my son — he’s wearing one under the Bummis Super Brite Wrap photo, reviewed below. So far, they’ve held up very well. As we’ve mentioned all week, the best benefit of prefolds is the cost — they’re definitely the cheapest cloth diaper available. But I also love their versatility — you can fold them a myriad of ways to fit your baby, and depending on the wrap you use, you could hold it together with a Snappi or simply hold it securely within the wrap. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of prefolds. Once you get the hang of them, diaper changing goes really quickly.
The main downside is possible reluctance from dads, grandparents, or other caregivers. If this is the case, and you want to mostly use prefolds and wraps, I’d recommend still using a few pockets or AIOs, and they can use these when it’s their turn.
• Super Brite Wrap and Super Whisper Wrap from Bummis (Diaper Cover/Wrap)

Bummis makes great wraps! I love both my Super Brite wrap in Blue and my Super Whisper wrap in Froggy Pond. They fit really well around a Bamboozle or a prefold, and the gussets around the legs has meant no leaks at all. I also like that there’s a little pocket in front so that you can slip in a prefold without Snappis. The Aplix on these guys are also the strongest I’ve seen — there’s no way my son could ever take this off. And since these are quite popular wraps, you’re likely to find some secondhand.
• Organic Cotton Cover from Imse Vimse (Diaper Cover/Wrap)

This is a very lightweight, soft cover with the most adorable farm print. I think this is my favorite in the cute department! The hook and closure front is softer, but our son has never been able to remove this. I do wish there were inside velcro tabs to close up the velcro for wash time, but it’s no problem just to adhere it to the front. This cover also fits my son perfectly – there’s no bagginess, and the gussets in the legs work wonderfully. It’s a bit pricier than other wraps, but if you’re going for cute, you can’t go wrong with these covers.
gDiapers (Hybrid Diaper)

If the thought of cloth diapers still seems challenging to you, then perhaps a hybrid diaper is your answer. gDiapers consist of a washable, cotton outer ‘little g’ pant and a plastic-free flushable diaper refill. They are made of breathable material just like sports clothing. So the outside is a simple cotton cover, and inside is a detachable waterproof liner. Inside the liner, you add a flushable diaper insert, which makes the diaper absorbent. When it’s dirty, you can either flush the insert, compost it (it breaks down in 50-150 days), or even toss it in the trash — there’s no plastic, so it’s biodegradable. You should still toss poop in the toilet, though.
I thought these would be harder than they were. Putting in the inserts were just as easy as refilling a pocket diaper, and the simple procedure behind flushing the insert is easy, once you get the hang of it. gDiapers’ website has a video on how the process works, and their customer service is fabulous — I called them with questions, and the woman on the phone was friendly, down-to-earth, and helpful.
My main complaint is the cost. These diapers are expensive. If your driving factor behind using cloth diapers is cost, then gDiapers aren’t for you. You can buy them locally at a wide variety of stores like Whole Foods, but the refill inserts still average about $.47. Quite a bit more than standard disposables. Until their price is lowered, I can’t really use gDiapers. But their covers work great as wraps for prefolds, and they’re super cute.
In addition to all these diapers, I also highly recommend using Snappis, Bummis BioSoft Liners, Imse Vimse Flushable Liners, and Soapnuts for cleaning. Many of you use all kinds of products, so please share your recommendations in the comments section. We can make this post a resource guide for people overwhelmed by their choices. So please contribute all you can!

I can’t thank you enough for the information you have shared this week! While I am still on the fence about cd vs. sposies, you have certainly saved me a ton of time in doing my own research
I think I might try the combo-method, using cloth at home and disposables out. The thought of throwing poop into the trash is nasty to me and I want the earth to be a greener place for this new child to grow up in!

We’ve been using cloth for nearly 4 years and our faves are Fuzzi Bunz. They are the ones I reach for most often. We also use Bum Genius, which are good also, I just prefer snaps to velcro. And with my big boys, the Bum Genius were too small before they had even grown out of the medium Fuzzi Bunz.

We use Fuzzi Bunz and Wonderoos pocket nappies and really like them. Our concerns were ease of use (my husband especially did not want something with a lot of hassle) and also how quickly they would dry since we are in a cold climate and don’t have a dryer. These both fit those criteria wonderfully. I am happy they have started making Fuzzi Bunz in the “one-size” kind now. That ends up saving a lot of money. (The Wonderoos only come in one size.) Thanks for all of the helpful articles this week!
Thank you for your review. It was very helpful to read, as I am expecting my first in the next couple of weeks. I am planning on using cloth diapers after the first few weeks. For me the cost issue is a factor so I am mainly looking at using the prefolds and maybe the Whisper Wraps but I am still figuring it out. Thanks for the help.
We like FuzziBunz, though we haven’t used most of the others listed. We tried prefolds with gerber diaper covers – not good! We also had a diaper service when we lived in a different state, but now it’s been so long (oldest is 4.5; she was potty-trained just when #2 appeared) that I don’t mind washing them any more.
I love Fuzzi Bunz/prefolds. The Prefolds I use are from Green Mountain Diapers, and they are really high quality/fit really well. I only have used cloth on my third baby, I wish I would have started with my first, they are great!
I used fuzzy bunz with my first child and now with my third we are starting again. Really with stronger gusto this time around due to cloth diapering 101! We love fuzzy bunz for their ease. Thanks for all the helpful and balanced info and encouragement.
We have one 5-month-old daughter, and she’s been in cloth since we got home from the hospital. We started with 6 weeks of a diaper service, Bottoms Up Diaper Service for those of you in Chicagoland/Southern Wis., and now we’re using prefolds and Bummis Superwhisper Wraps. We used Litewraps in the beginning, and the newborn size still fits in a pinch! It says it’s for up to 10lbs, but DD’s almost 14lbs, and they still fit snugly. I have one SposoEasy AIO, and one SustainableBabyish organic bamboo fleece overnight fitted, which is an intense diaper!
We also use handknit wool covers, though they aren’t ideal for under clothes in warm weather.
I have been tempted to try cloth diapers because of the cost, and because sometimes I like to be different.
I even bought a few with my first daughter but because she had a lot of eating issues I didn’t have enough time (Feeding her for the first 6 weeks took 90 m inutes out of every 2 hours). but with the impending arrival of kiddo number 2, I am thinking about it again.
I use both cloth & disposable diapers – cloth during the day, and disposable at night, and when we are going to be away from the house for a good long time. I use both BumGenius & Kooshies, and I really like them both. Although the BumGenius are great, I like the way the Kooshies have the layer of flannel next to the skin.
This was very helpful. I think one of the hardest parts about cloth diapering for me was figuring out the different brands. I want to be able to remove disposable diapers from my shopping list.
Rachel´s last blog post…The Secret to Great Iced Coffee
Using cloth was the best thing I’ve done for my little one. It was a great experience and we will be using it once again for our next baby. Hands down, I loved the Imse Vimse covers paired with Green Mountain diaper prefolds. It was inexpensive and very easy to use.
I use bumGenius pretty exclusively – I find they fit my daughter so well, they are simple to use (for mommy AND others), and I like the simplicity of having just one kind of diaper in my stash (for the most part – I have those few random others floating around).
I love the fact that when CDing my daughter doesn’t break out, but after a disposable day she has a rash. I mean, I don’t love the rash, but I love the fact that the cloth works so well!!

I have not used cloth diapers yet as I am pregnant with my first! I do plan on using them for the cost saving benefits and the green aspect of it. Thanks for all of your helpful info this week-it’s been wonderful.
There are so many reasons why I *plan* to use cloth when my baby arrives. Cost- the option I choose may be a diaper service. This is based on living in an apartment with no private washing machine and may not be the cheapest, but I am hoping it is a fixed cost. The environment is a big factor as is health. I’d also love to support a mom business rather than give my hard earned money to P&G.
Jane´s last blog post…The Play Kitchen Sold!
I’ve cloth diapered all three of my boys and am not ashamed to admit that we do sposie them at night (so their pajamas will fit). We ultimately settled on BumGenius3.0′s for the third baby and were gifted 12 of them at a baby shower. LOVE THEM. The first two kids totally wore out the used BumGenius2.0′s that I’d bought so it was *such* a luxury to have *brand new* diapers for the third baby. Plus, the 2 year old is not potty trained and he wears the same diapers as the 5 month old. SO much simpler than keeping track of separate sizes.
we use mother-ease covers (which we LOVE) over mother-ease one-size diapers or greenmountaindiapers cotton prefolds.
we’re extrememly satisfied with cloth and looking forward to CDing baby #2 soon.
I’ve used cloth diapers with the last six of my seven children and plan on using them again when #8 is born in October. I can truly testify to the savings the cloth diapers have given us!!! The brand I started with and still love is Mother-ease One size fits all. They lasted for the first four children, before we had to buy any new ones.

I’ve wanted to try cloth diapers with every baby…we have 5 kids with two in diapers. I’m currently learning to be self sufficient during my homestead challenge and would love to not need to buy diapers anymore!!
I haven’t started cloth diapering yet but I am really interested in it because it would save us a ton of money!
Great giveaway!
I hope I win! This will really help me get started on our cloth diapering journey!
Here is my tweet:

I currently use the BumGenius 3.0 and love them! My son always had blowouts in disposables and we have not had one since using these diapers. I also like the insert that snaps because I can fold it over for extra absorbtion in the front, which is where little boys need it most.
I would love to win some of the different brands to give them a try as well.
I highly recommend the Bum Genius one-size AIO diapers. We have been using them for 19 months so far and are pregnant with our second and getting ready to start back at the beginning! We are now swapping over to the organic BG with snaps (we have found that toddlers and velcroe don’t always mix
)
Laura L´s last blog post…Unity Awesomeness
My newborn nephew uses cloth diapers. Currently my sis and her hubby are using a service, but I’d like to get them started with their own set!
Thanks for this opportunity and I have learned a lot this week that I didn’t know about cloth diapers. Much has changed since they were used on my bum! haha
I have to admit that I’m still really on the fence with cloth diapering still BUT I do think I need to give it a shot. My plan right now for this next baby is to maybe do a combo of cloth and disposable for a while and then re-evealuate!
I use mostly prefolds and covers on my four month old daughter. I LOVE Mommy’s Touch one-size covers. I was working on making diapers, but my hands went numb the last two months of my pregnancy, which made sewing difficult to say the least. So in a panic I looked around for a one-size cover that we could use until she was potty-trained. I found Mommy’s Touch and I love them. I have found them on clearance at http://www.clothdiaperclearance.com, which makes the start up price more manageable. We also have one Bummis wrap, which I go back and forth on. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I dont. I also recently bought some Mommy’s Touch one size pockets. My baby has skinny thighs, so they don’t work as well as I had hoped. The inserted prefold makes the diaper stick out from her thighs, which means leakage. But it’s minor. I really didn’t think I would like prefolds as much as I do, but I think they are really great.
We’ve been using cloth from the start (baby is two months old), and we love it. We use bumGeniuses overnight and when we’re out. I love how we can double them up and get the extra absorbency, keeping us from having to wake her up with a diaper change in the middle of the night. I also love how easy it is to change her in these–I think we might actually be able to talk our daycare into using these (a big deal in Little Rock, AR). Around the house during the day, we use prefolds with wraps. My favorite wrap is the Nikki Breathable Poly cover, found at babybunz.com. It’s super easy to use, and keeps things in, for the most part. Our girl’s poopy diapers are pretty hard to contain by any means these days (thinking this will change when we start solids), though!
Brooke´s last blog post…A massive diaper (post): on cloth diapering
I love cloth diapers!! I put my first baby in fuzzi bunz at 8 months and so wish I had started earlier. I’ve not had any problems and plan to use them again with my next baby. Now I’m expecting baby #2 and already purchased some kissaluvs and prefolds with super whisper wraps to use for the first 6 months. I’ve had some friends use kissaluvs with good success, especially on newborns, so I’m excited to see how they will work out.
Thanks for the posts, hope I win some free diapers!!
We use mostly cloth-eez prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. I like the shape of them – they are wider and squarer than others I’ve seen, and this makes them fit my kid well.
My current favorite aspect of using prefolds is that if you are paying attention you can use them without a cover. This is cooler and more breathable, helping to heal our never-ending yeast infection.
We’ve been cd’ing since our little one was born, and we prefer pockets, aios, and ai2s. I love our Bumgenius 3.0 all in ones. They are trim, super absorbent, come in great colors, and I love that there’s a pocket for additional stuffing. We haven’t used it for stuff-ins though; we use it to turn the dipe inside out so it dries faster.

I have never cloth diapered before, but have always wanted to try. Now I have a washer and a dryer so here I go.
I just decided to start doing cloth diapers this week and found this website when I researched it. I’m going to be doing prefolds with covers, and I’m trying Thirsties covers because they’re economical and have great reviews. Thank you for the useful information!
Meagan´s last blog post…Diaper Sprayer for way cheap!
Our first baby is due at the end of July so I am making my game plan now as far as cds go. I totally agree with the blog this week that talks about being a good steward. I stay at home and I feel my job is to make the most of the resources that we have. Which includes our house, money, time, and natural resources. I am still working on meal planning and budgeting, etc but I think that cloth diapers fit in right along with those things. I hope to make it an economical choice for us and reduce our waste. Yay less trash. Thank you Simple Mom for helping me work on all these things.
We never use them or even considered them with our first child seven years ago. This time, I feel more confident in our ability to try CD and your post series was extremely helpful to open dad to the idea.
As I mentioned in another post, here in San Diego we have mandatory water conservation notices, but I would like to try CD once the summer is over. We want to combo diaper at the beginning and winning these diapers would help us getting started.

I would really really like to transition to cloth diapering for money reasons, but also for the transition to potty training!
Thanks!
Just started cloth diapers 2 weeks ago and we are loving it!! Yes WE hubby is just as in to it as me! We just started our stash with Gro Baby’s but hope to add some Blueberry’s and FB to the mix. The Gro Baby’s have been great and a very easy transition. Plus our weather has been perfect for line drying!
We don’t used cloth diapers right now, but I really want to use them for the next ones to save money and create less trash. I’d love to win some of these to get our stash started!
Hi there!
)
I have been CDing my 7 month old for 2 months now and LOVE it! I started out with 1 AMP, 1 Fuzzi Bunz one size, 1 Happy Heinys one size and 1 Bum Genius one size. I wasn’t a fan of the AMP (I found the PUL leaked!!!) But the other 3 were great, I ended up with buying more BGs, but am adding a couple HH prints to my stash (I love the monkeys!). I just noticed a new diaper out there, the Smartipants, has anyone tried that yet? It’s a sleeve instead of a pocket and the insert comes out in the wash, you don’t even have to pull it out!
Happy CDing (and I hope I win
Thank you SO MUCH for all of the helpful information on Cloth Diapers this week. My husband & I recently found out that we are expecting our first little one & we are strongly considering using CD’s, actually I’m pretty convinced! Just a matter of saving up for them but winning some would be great!
We’ve been cloth diapering for two years, and I have tried SO many different kinds. There are plenty kinds that I like, but after a bunch of experimenting I have switched to all Bum Genius one-size pockets with some bamboo terry prefolds (from panda tushies) and Thirsties covers for back-up. With two in diapers, this is the way to go! I do prefer snaps over velcro, but I’m willing to overlook that for the performance/value of BGs.
Tara´s last blog post…Grapefruit.
I didn’t use cloth with my first son (who is hopefully going to be potty training very soon!) But I am very interested in using them when we have our next child because of the cost factor.
I’m willing to give cloth diapers a try because my mom just gave me about 20 left over from when I was a baby. I’m just not so sure on how to get started, reading this series this week has been an eye-opener. I’d love to win and get some more information from such great companies!
We’re expecting our first baby in 2.5 weeks and are planning on using cloth diapers because of cost savings and hopefully because they are better for the Earth.
I have some Baby Kicks hemp prefolds ordered and am currently trying to decide what to fill out my stash with.
I love my Dreameze All In One. It is very trim, but has two “flaps” for absorbency. Because they are flaps, it also dries faster. And it has snaps not velcro which means my little rascal of a daughter can take them off. I have also found that one size (medium or large) will fit her from about 6 month through potty training – got to love that!
I don’t have children yet, but I have been thinking about all kinds of ways to make life more ecologically friendly and more healthy. Which is why I am very interested in all your posts here about cloth diapering, because it seems to be both!

As of now I’m eating vegetarian whenever I can and I started using a menstrual cup (do a search on google if you don’t know what this is)! It is wonderful, maybe I should write you an e-mail to tell about it, since you do the reuse for your baby, you might as well do it for yourself!
I also try to reduce waste by not using plastic bags but reusable grocery bags and containers for preserving food.
And since I’m already doing everything asked, I plan to take the Wardrobe Refashion pledge this month! See http://www.wardroberefashion.net/
So I hope I will bring my children up in the most sensible way possible, which would include cloth diapers for me
I’m looking forward to the rest of your series!
Oh, and I thought of something else, now that I was reading more of your post (saying you use a little shampoo in a spray):
Which you know, because you’re doing one that’s one my wishlist: cloth diapering when I’ll have a baby.
I don’t use shampoo anymore, since september! Instead, I use a little baking soda. I had to search a little for a good routine, but now it works fine! I also use baking soda as a deodorant and don’t use any other cosmetics anymore. Except for toothpaste (didn’t dare to give that up, but I’m trying to find the most ecological and healthy one) and cleaning liquid for my lenses. Water does everything! For scrubbing I use a brush and a scrubbing glove.
Why? Because I read a lot of no-poo articles and was appalled at the score of my shampoo on http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ (from the Environmental Working Group). I’ll have to use sunscreen soon though….
I only use the baking soda because my hair gets greasy every week, but apparently, if you’ve never ever used shampoo (so pregnant people here, maybe your baby could do without!) you won’t ever have greasy hair if you just wash it with shampoo!
I’m amazed at how clean and healthy I can be without all these products I thought were necessary to keep my skin and hair nice AND I’m so happy I’m putting only one soft chemical (baking soda) in the water and not all the rest (which includes carcinogens!)
I know I post this at the risk of making me seem a total nut and making you think the menstrual cup is something silly like that too, but please don’t
I may be a nut because I do all of these things, but doing one of them isn’t that crazy
Sorry for the long long comment
We’re on our second cd’d kid, fuzzibunz all the way for us – from 2 months until potty trained. We also used kissaluvs 0′s from birth till about 2 months – soooo soft. What a great series of posts and an amazing giveaway.
I am due to have our third child the end of this year and cloth diapering has really begun to interest me. There are a few reasons, but mainly cost and no chemicals on my baby. Only wish I had decided to try them with the first two.
Thanks for the great series and giveaways!
I haven’t used cloth diapers but I have been looking into buying some for our next baby due in a few months. I always thought they were icky but I didn’t realize there are so many different options and they have improved a ton! I’d love to try cloth diapers!
I currently use disposables on my 13 month son, but I am thinking about doing cloth for at least the potty training stage. I like the idea of earlier potty training, and helping the child understand that they are wet, that disposables don’t give. I am also more intrigued with cloth diapers after these posts because I thought you still had to use pins, the diapers look alot more convient than I imagined.
I have a 1 1/2 year old and a 1 month old and it’s just starting to hit me how much money we are shelling out for diapers right now! I think I’d be willing to switch to cloth to save some money! It has been great to learn so much about the cloth diapering process this week! Thanks.
I use a combination between disposable and cloth diapers. When my first son was born we bought a “sample” pack of cloth diapers and I fell in love with BumGenius diapers. I used cloth diapers at home and disposables for travel. That system worked well until I had my second child only 15 months after the first. My second son is now 5 months old and it has been challenging for me to have both of them in diapers. After reading this blog this week I am inspired to use my cloth diapers more! Thanks!
I’ve used pre-folds at least part of the time for all 4 of my children. I didn’t even realize the options out there for cloth diapering until a couple years ago! Pre-fold is our choice because of the price; but I do have some Motherease wraps, cloth diapers and an AIO that my sister gave me, and they work great. I like the AIO–cuts down on one step during the diaper change!

I am 23 weeks pregnant with our third daughter. I contemplated using cloth diapers with our second but never got around to it–the choices were so overwhelming. This time around, a friend has lent me some pocket diapers I am using for my 22-month-old. The main reason to CD this time would be mainly for the cost. In case my 22-month-old is still in diapers when the baby gets here, man, I’d hate to pay for twice the cost of diapers. However, if we’re using the pocket diapers (which I really like so far), they can share and the cost will be so minimalized (now, if only I can narrow it down to a brand!).
Geez, almost 700 comments already! I suppose it’s unlikely anyone will read this, but I can recommend a few different CDs (none of them are mentioned in the original post). For newborns, Kissaluvs size 0 are great. They’re pretty much the only ones I know of that will fit a tiny babe from day 1. And they’re so sweet-looking! For prefolds, the Chinese prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers are ace. Always easy to pin or snappi, and they work great unfastened in a cover. The perfect length and width! We’ve only needed two sizes (the infant yellow-edged and the brown-edged), and DS is over 12 months now. The third cloth diaper I recommend is the one we use the most: Dream-Eze fitteds from Montana Diaper Co. They’re organic and the separate layers mean fast drying. Absorbency is great, too! And I’ve always bought seconds, so the price was right.
I’ve also used AIOs, but I’ve come to hate anything made with PIL, so they’re not favorites. Can’t recommend them, though I can see why they might appeal to some people!

I’m currently using unbleached Chinese prefolds with litewraps or prowraps. They are easier on our budget at this time, and still work great!
I actually can’t stand using dispo. Just because to me- cloth is so much more simple.

I am expecting my third child in three weeks and came across the cloth diapering how-to videos and was astonished at how easy it all looked. One reason I am considering switching from disposables to cloth is to save money. I am for sure going to start making my own wipes! Thanks for the demo–it was really helpful for those of us who are slightly hesitant about cloth diapering!

I love cloth diapers! One of my favorites is Happy Heinys one size. My 21 month old daughter loves them too, she always asks for the “monkeys” and “cow” first. Their prints definitely score a 5 for cuteness! Also I love how soft they are. And they have snaps which is great for my daughter who has started to tug at her diaper.
For my newborn I have fallen in love w/ swaddlebees fleece wraps diaper covers. They are so soft! They dry quickly and I have never had a newborn blowout with them, even using prefolds. These are a bit bulky for an older child (I bought one in large but it doesn’t fit well under more fitted/less stretchy clothes) They work great under onesies and baby clothes though.
I have used many other brands and have yet to find one I really dislake. But the are my 2 favorites!
This info was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I have always wanted to use cloth but it was so overwhelming I didn’t know where to start (and nobody I know uses cloth). Now I have everything I need to get started on my 4 month old. Can’t say thanks enough for all the info! Great job!
I have not used cloth diapers. I have two sons, one is now potty trained, and the other is 14 months. I really hate the thought of all the disposables going into landfills, and I know I have at least another year before my second son is potty trained…So I’d like to do at least a little part to reduce my families waste! Plus, cloth diapers just look more comfortable!!
thanks for the entry!

We are big fans of bumGenius at our house. I started using CDs when DD was about 7 months old. I didn’t think I could handle it when she was younger so I waited a few months and we started them at 7 months. It is SO EASY! bG’s are practically like disposables in terms of ease of use. And diaper laundry has been a piece of cake. We do a cold pre-wash cycle with a scoop of detergent, then a hot wash cycle with about half a scoop, then 2 rinse cycles. I usually put the inserts in the dryer and line dry the covers.
I realize now I forgot to say why I fell in love with BumGenius. I really like them because we have never had major blow-outs and they wash well.
My DS is 9 months and we’ve been using cloth for about 5 months now. I wish I had known earlier how easy it is or I would’ve done it right from the start!! We tried just about every style and many brands of dipes before deciding that Bumgenius 3.0s just work the best for us. We’ve sold off the others and now we have about 14 BGs and it works fantastically, I wouldn’t go back!! My husband was uneasy at first, but now he brags about cloth to all our friends.
I have an 18 month old, and just found out that I am pregnant with # 2! I would love to start cloth diapering with this one. I was interested in the idea before, but my husband was very anti-cloth. I’m hoping to bring him around once he sees the potential savings.:)
I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first. I want to use cloth diapers due to the long term savings!!! Thanks so much for these posts! They have been so helpful!

And I twittered you too.
I didn’t know if we were supposed to leave a comment about that or not, but I reallllllly want to win, so I can use something other than the cheap-o gerbers that we have!
I have been wanting to take the plunge to cloth diapering for about a year and a half now. I was overwhelmed w/ the options and didn’t want to make a mistake and waste money on diapers that wouldn’t do the job. Thank you so much for this series…it has opened my eyes to the ease of it all, and that likely I’ll end up w/ multiple differnet types anyway. The videos are fantastic for a visual learner like myself. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have a baby who would love the soft cloth diapers, and a 3 year old who would love it for night time.
Bless you!
Amy B.
I would love to try these because of the cost savings!
Earlier potty-training is also a plus.
We are currently using disposables, but I have been thinking about switching to cloth diapers for a while. The hang-up has been that my husband hasn’t been for it (he thinks it’s a lot of work) and since he stays home with the kids, it’s really his decision. Thank you so much for posting all fo this – he’s beginning to come around!
We could really use a head start on our cloth diaper supply since I have a 7 week old, 17 month old, and 2 1/2 year old in diapers!
We have just started using cloth diapers this last 6 months and we use the all in ones Kushies brand. We are very satisfied with them, they wash up nice and I love using less disposables. It would be great to boost our supply, since we are expecting another baby next month.
What a great contest giveaway! I have left a comment on my blog at:
http://new-little-blessing.blogspot.com
If I win any of the diapers I would love to give them to my sister who is expecting their 4th child. She could use some more! Thanks.
I’d love to try cloth diapering to reduce my carbon footprint . . . Goodness knows I’ve made a big enough one with all of these disposables I’ve been using!!
well, we have been waiting for a LONG time for a baby girl that we’ll be going all the way to ethiopia to get. and we already have a few types of cloth diapers to try by my many clothie proponent friends. but they are from the older-school shell type of diapers, mostly, and i’m looking forward to trying some of the one size fits all posh varieties. go tsh!
theepic´s last blog post…the most unhindered reaction i will ever hear.
I’m not using cloth diapers, but I have been thinking of starting…they could save money, are better for the environment, and I hear speed up potty training
I would love to try cloth diapers just to possibly get my kids potty-trained sooner!!! My son is already 3, but still in diapers. My daughter is 16-months old. It makes me sick to think of how much money we’ve spent on disposables! We plan on having at least two more children, so I would love to try cloth diapers. I think they’re super cute, too!

I used G Diapers for a few months and loved them. The reason I stopped is exactly as described above. Too expensive. In my town, they are only sold at one store and are expensive! Baby Girl has outgrown them now and I didn’t order the larger size. For now, we’re using chlorine-free disposables but I wish I could still use the G Diapers. I loved them!

I am a part time pinner. I did not know where to begin so I brought many different types and brands online at diaper swappers. I had no problem with the used diapers. Some where more used than others. In the end I use bum genius pocket diapers and monkey doodlez AIO. I also like monkey doodlez swim diaper. The best cover I have is from blueberries. I am attempting to use prefolds, but my DS does not like being still for the pinning.
We have quite a stash but our baby was born 8 weeks early and all of our diapers are much too big for him, including the infant sized prefolds we bought. But we have tried both a Thirsties Pocket AIO and a Green Acre Designs Pocket diaper. While both of these were a little too big, they are both very adjustable and we didn’t have leaks with either diaper. The one problem I do have is that the insert in the Thirsties Pocket AIO is not removable at all and it takes forever to dry through all of the layers. But, it is very easy to use and convienant because you don’t even have to worry about putting an insert into the pocket.
I can’t wait until my baby is big enough to fit into the rest of his cloth diapers!
What about if you’re not a stay at home mom. Can I save diapers by doing cloth only in the evening and weekends? I’d still like to be nice to the environment as well.
We have used the chinese prefolds with bummis super whisper wrap. They are definitely good for the money. We have had a few issues with wetness around the leg areas, but overall very good!

I’m a first time mom due in August and am really excited to try cloth diapers! I am excited about the cloth savings and environmental benefit. My parents will be taking care of the baby during the day, and since they cloth diapered me and my brother, they are totally on board!! Even my husband is being a good sport about it!
I would like to try cloth diapers to cut dp costs . . . but the initial start-up (and still wondering about convenience) is a little scary for me!
We cloth diaper and love prefolds with Bummis and Imse Vimse wraps and Fuzzibunz pockets for nighttime.
We are expecting our first little one in Sept. ’09 and have been researching cloth diapers since we got the positive. I can’t see any reason not to use them as all the brands we have looked at make it simple and convenient. Honestly, who could has for anything more? And the fact the my DH initiated the entire conversation is a double bonus-now he has no reason to not help out!
)
We still haven’t made a final decision about which brand to use, so at this point we are just sitting tight… don’t want to jinx anything! I will repost again when we have made our decision. The best part is knowing there are so many like minded parents/caregivers who see the benefits of CD. It really makes the decision much easier with all the support available!
I use Mother-Ease fitteds for my DD and I really like them. I’m open to trying others though!

I have used cloth for just about 4 1/2 months (Our son was 2 weeks old when we started) The majority of our stash is Bum Genius 3.0 one sizes. We love them. Especially Dad! They are highly absorbent and so simple to use. Downside the $$$ but we will more than recoop our money if he wears them even if just for a year. (I’m pretty sure he’ll be in diapers longer than that LOL). One other downside is they have a tendency to develop buildup easily, we did have a leak problem that was quickly overcome with some intense stripping. The manufacture was quite helpful to us in finding the source of the problem. We also have 1 Happy Heinz one size, I like it except it was way too big for him until just about a month ago whereas the Bum Genius fit him from about 2 weeks (10 lbs…he was a big baby) on. I also have a random stash of fitted diapers that appear homemade out of prefolds that I picked up at the thrift store and a set of kushies covers (cheap! less than $10 for all) I used these while I was getting the buildup issue sorted out and they worked just fine. In hindsight I would have purchased a hybrid of prefolds and covers as well as my Bum Genius’ to cut the cost down alot! All in all cloth diapering is working out great for us. Its economical and environmentally friendly…we like both
Thank you so much for this comprehensive overview of cloth diapers. I’m due in a few weeks with my first baby and plan on cloth diapering. Right now I’m purchasing a few different types to try. It’s so overwhelming to try and figure out which kinds to use!
We use a bunch for different purposes– right now we’re on fitteds because I just think that they’re cooler for him in the summer than pockets, and we’re at home all day, so it’s easy for me to change them when they’re wet. We use Baby Beehinds, which haven’t leaked even big poos even without covers. We just throw on a cover if we’re going out, and it works great!
I cloth diapered my first two children until they were about a year old. I just found the task too overwhelming with my third. Your article has helped renew my interest and I’m ready to give it a shot again. My toddler is still probably a good year from being potty trained and I really do want to reduce our family’s contribution to the landfill.
Thanks for a great post and giveaway!!!!
Considering trying cloth diapers now for so many reasons… cost (we want to have several more kids so could resuse them), early potty training and babies do look so cute in cloth diapers!
We are using cloth with our little one–only took us until baby #6 to make the change from disposables!
We use prefolds and I love, love, love Thirsties covers—no leaking!! I’ve just purchased a Blueberry Coverall (one size) and so far love it too. We usually use a BumGenius 3.0 one size for overnight….I like those too, but have been a little bummed that the velco stitching isn’t holding up as well as I think it should.
Great series!
Would just LOVE to win this giveaway!
We’ve used cloth for almost a year (since my son was 4 months old) and are planning to use cloth for Baby Girl (expected to arrive in the coming weeks). Bum Genius OS are our favorite. They are easy to use and are trimmer than prefolds. (But we use, and are happy with, our prefolds and fuzzibunz.)
I have not used cloth diapers and I don’t know anyone who has, but I want to be more eco-friendly. I want to teach my children that it’s important to take care of our resources. I didn’t have any education about cloth diapers before and didn’t have time to learn about them, but I’m all for them now and want to give them a try. Thank you for the diaper ratings. I know, now, what it is I want to try first.
I use the BumGenius 3.0 One Size diapers. Overall, I like them. They’ve definitely saved us money in the long run. The only thing I’m having a problem with right now is getting the urine smell out. Any suggestions??
I haven’t used cloth diapers but I am expecting twins later this year and have been really enjoying the articles on Cloth Diapers. My husband and I read that twins go through an estimated 16,000 diapers before potty training and I can’t stomach the thought of that impact on the planet. We’re looking at the Bum Genius and the Fuzzibunz for our little ones.
Thanks for the reviews!
