So far during our Cloth Diapering 101 week, you’ve heard about the different types of cloth diapers available, why you should at least consider cloth diapers, answers to common misconceptions about cloth diapers, and two videos that show you how to use and clean them. Today, I’m going to review the cloth diaper brands I recommend.
This list is not exhaustive. There are many, many cloth diaper brands that do a great job, and have their superiority for any wide variety of reasons. But I don’t want to review something I haven’t actually tried, so today’s information is solely based on my personal experience. In the comments section, feel free to use similar criteria to add your $.02 about another brand you like.
The reviewed criteria are absorbency, cost, overall fit, drying time (on a clothesline), the cute factor, the company’s customer service, and Dad and Grandparent-friendliness. This last category is contributed by my husband, who rated each diaper based on his first-hand experience. Hesitant dads, grandparents, and other caregivers is a major consideration with cloth diapers, so it’s important to give honest feedback regarding a diaper’s ease of use.
I’ve rated the diapers in each category from one to five clothespins. Here are the definitions:

• Perfect Size Diaper from FuzziBunz (Pocket Diaper)

This is a great diaper from FuzziBunz. It’s the one we have the most quantity of, so we use one of these almost daily. They’re a cinch to snap, and the shape is great around the legs — we’ve never had a blow-out with one of these. My son is skinny, so the caboose is a little loose, but that means there’s plenty of room to add a doubler or extra insert at night. These are one of the fastest-drying diapers we have, and the customer service is wonderful. I’ve interacted with them a few times, and they’ve always responded very quickly to my emails. FuzziBunz is a great company.
I also love their other products I have. We use their hanging diaper pail, and we’ve never had an odor problem. After we wash it with the diapers, it dries really quickly. We carry their travel wet bag in our diaper bag, so the few times we’ve needed it, there’s never been a smell issue — you can’t tell anything’s in your diaper bag. This comes in handy in other ways, too, since it’s waterproof — our older daughter wet her underwear and jeans one time, and we just tossed them in there until we got home. It can also go in the wash.
I like their wipes, too. With their Organic Double-Sided Wipes, one side is cotton and the other side is a soft fleece. They work great for getting off poop, especially in combo with homemade diaper wipe solution.
Overall, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything by FuzziBunz.
• 3.0 One-Size Diaper from BumGenius (Pocket Diaper)

This is a great, quick-drying diaper that fits my trim baby really well. We’ve never had an explosion in this one, either, and the Aplix (super-strong velcro) stays put. I only have one of these diapers, but I’m happy every time I use it. The insert has snaps so that you can optionally shorten the insert and make it thicker in the front, which is great for a boy. And because you can adjust the size with the snaps in front, you only need one set of these diapers to last from birth to potty.
BumGenius is very popular with cloth diapering mamas, so even though it’s on the pricey side, you might be able to find secondhand diapers on the internet.
• Blueberry One-Size Bamboo Velour Diaper from Swaddlebees (Pocket Diaper)

This is quite the luxurious diaper from Swaddlebees! It’s easily adjustable for any size you need, and the inside is a super-soft organic bamboo cotton blend. The Aplix is really strong, too. The best thing about this diaper is the inserts — each diaper comes with two! One is smaller, for the really young age, and the second one is longer that snaps together as a trifold. You can use the smaller insert as a doubler at night, so you’ve essentially got four layers going on. Each layer is really thin but absorbent — this is often our nighttime diaper.
My only complaint is the cost. It’s one of the pricier pocket diapers out there, so if you’re interested in Swaddlebees, you could first look secondhand.
• Side Snapping Diaper from BottomBumpers (All-In-One Diaper)

BottomBumpers as more of a hybrid of a pocket and AIO, because BottomBumpers includes a soaker that snaps on top of the inside. It’s a double-folded, super-soft organic cotton padding topped with bamboo velour. It’s a breeze to snap in because you don’t even need to reach inside. But what I love best about these diapers is the fit — for my slim little man, these are the best-fitting diapers we have. They contour wonderfully between the legs, and the side snaps keep it nice and trim on the bottom.
Again, the only issue is the cost. But for an AIO, it’s not bad. And I love that I’m supporting a small cottage industry run by a mom.
• Bamboozle from Bummis (Fitted Diaper)

Oh my goodness, I love this diaper from Bummis. This diaper has four layers of bamboo, which means it’s compact yet super-absorbent. It is unbelievably soft! I love that a 100% bamboo is so eco-friendly — bamboo is a renewable resource with a very short growth cycle and it is grown without fertilizers or pesticides. Plus, it’s breathable, cool, and absorbs 60% more than cotton. This is one of our favorite diapers, and I’d have more if it weren’t for the cost. Still, I love how slim-fitting these diapers are. There’s absolutely no puffy bum here. He’s wearing this diaper under the Imse Vimse Organic Wrap photo, reviewed below.
• Organic Cotton Prefolds from Bummis (Prefold Diaper)

These are the prefolds that come with Bummis’ Organic Cotton Diaper Kit, a complete diapering system in a box. These unbleached prefolds are super absorbent and soft, and they’re a great size for my son — he’s wearing one under the Bummis Super Brite Wrap photo, reviewed below. So far, they’ve held up very well. As we’ve mentioned all week, the best benefit of prefolds is the cost — they’re definitely the cheapest cloth diaper available. But I also love their versatility — you can fold them a myriad of ways to fit your baby, and depending on the wrap you use, you could hold it together with a Snappi or simply hold it securely within the wrap. Don’t be intimidated by the idea of prefolds. Once you get the hang of them, diaper changing goes really quickly.
The main downside is possible reluctance from dads, grandparents, or other caregivers. If this is the case, and you want to mostly use prefolds and wraps, I’d recommend still using a few pockets or AIOs, and they can use these when it’s their turn.
• Super Brite Wrap and Super Whisper Wrap from Bummis (Diaper Cover/Wrap)

Bummis makes great wraps! I love both my Super Brite wrap in Blue and my Super Whisper wrap in Froggy Pond. They fit really well around a Bamboozle or a prefold, and the gussets around the legs has meant no leaks at all. I also like that there’s a little pocket in front so that you can slip in a prefold without Snappis. The Aplix on these guys are also the strongest I’ve seen — there’s no way my son could ever take this off. And since these are quite popular wraps, you’re likely to find some secondhand.
• Organic Cotton Cover from Imse Vimse (Diaper Cover/Wrap)

This is a very lightweight, soft cover with the most adorable farm print. I think this is my favorite in the cute department! The hook and closure front is softer, but our son has never been able to remove this. I do wish there were inside velcro tabs to close up the velcro for wash time, but it’s no problem just to adhere it to the front. This cover also fits my son perfectly – there’s no bagginess, and the gussets in the legs work wonderfully. It’s a bit pricier than other wraps, but if you’re going for cute, you can’t go wrong with these covers.
gDiapers (Hybrid Diaper)

If the thought of cloth diapers still seems challenging to you, then perhaps a hybrid diaper is your answer. gDiapers consist of a washable, cotton outer ‘little g’ pant and a plastic-free flushable diaper refill. They are made of breathable material just like sports clothing. So the outside is a simple cotton cover, and inside is a detachable waterproof liner. Inside the liner, you add a flushable diaper insert, which makes the diaper absorbent. When it’s dirty, you can either flush the insert, compost it (it breaks down in 50-150 days), or even toss it in the trash — there’s no plastic, so it’s biodegradable. You should still toss poop in the toilet, though.
I thought these would be harder than they were. Putting in the inserts were just as easy as refilling a pocket diaper, and the simple procedure behind flushing the insert is easy, once you get the hang of it. gDiapers’ website has a video on how the process works, and their customer service is fabulous — I called them with questions, and the woman on the phone was friendly, down-to-earth, and helpful.
My main complaint is the cost. These diapers are expensive. If your driving factor behind using cloth diapers is cost, then gDiapers aren’t for you. You can buy them locally at a wide variety of stores like Whole Foods, but the refill inserts still average about $.47. Quite a bit more than standard disposables. Until their price is lowered, I can’t really use gDiapers. But their covers work great as wraps for prefolds, and they’re super cute.
In addition to all these diapers, I also highly recommend using Snappis, Bummis BioSoft Liners, Imse Vimse Flushable Liners, and Soapnuts for cleaning. Many of you use all kinds of products, so please share your recommendations in the comments section. We can make this post a resource guide for people overwhelmed by their choices. So please contribute all you can!

We didn’t use cloth diapers for our first two children, but decided to give it a try on #3. It has been going great so far. We started out using pre-folds and wraps that we borrowed from a friend. I forget what brand they were. After the newborn stage (around 1 month), we started using the Bummis super whisper wraps and prefolds. They are great. We are now on the medium size of them and still like them. They wash up great and hardly show any signs of wear.
We would love to try some other types of diapers, too, like the FuzziBunz or BumGenius or any of the others.
Thanks,
Kate
I’ve always felt guilty for using disposable diapers, if i could do one nice thing for the enviroment i’d love it to be not throwing away any more diapers!
I’ve been using cloth with my 18 month old since day one and it just works for us. We primarily use prefolds and covers but at day care we use aio’s and pockets. I find pockets to be so much easier because they dry faster than aio’s but the aio’s are great too. Recommendations: aside from those listed (we love FB’s!) we like All Together Diapers aio’s (although they just revamped them and we haven’t tried the new ones yet). Also for covers, we really love Wiggle Worms Bottoms. Its a WAHM that has excellent customer service and the fit is awesome! We’ve been wanting to try Swaddlebees so we’d love to win this contest

I did not use cloth diapers for my first two children, but have been intrigued by them this time around – I’m due with #3 in 2 months. I am mostly interested in them for the environmental factor, but the cost savings doesn’t hurt either! Now I just need to see what our daycare thinks…Thanks for the timely series!
I am a big fan of cloth diapers. I’m just starting out with them, so I’ve only got about 1/3 of the diapers I need to do cloth full time as I’m stocking up gradually to lessen the impact of the investment. My favorite diaper brand is Fuzzibunz because they are so soft and dry so fast, but I also love bumGenius because they are easier for me to clean and I’m not worried that my boy is going to pee too much in them (we use both liners – he pees a lot). What a fantastic giveaway!
My son will be two on Monday and has been using the potty on and off since he was 18 months, inspired by his older sister. We are not into the hardcore potty training yet. We have used disposables but I would love CD as a nighttime alternative! He could potty train and wear his big boy undies during the day and his CD at night!
I tried cloth diaper the old-fashion way with my first one, pre-fold with pin and diaper cover. It was okay til I washed them (after soaking) and started to break her bottom out. I did tons of research but decided I could not afford them (I know it would be cheaper in the long run but never did order). So finally I went to one of those two year consignment sales and brought several hand-me-downs. I got three different kind:
Bambineo (fleece) – 4
WonderWorks – 1
Wonderoos – 2
Koooshies (make in insert) – 3
I loved them all but the Bambineo because they did not hold anything, one peeing would wet the whole diaper. I loved the WonderWorks, it had a very thick insert made in (under the top layer); it holded alot. All of them had to have diaper cover. But the sad thing is that my first one quick out-grow these and I could not find any more at a cheap price. Then my second came along. When she was 2mts I starting looking for more of the same brands above. I finally found the Kooshies/Kushies at Wal-Mart. A pack of 5 for $35 with a waterproof cover. I absolutely love them and would recommend them to anyone. I have lots of pre-fold diaper so I use them as an extra insert to make the diaper last longer. I am very glad I could buy such. If I had the money, I probably would loved to give bum and g diapers a go. Maybe next time.
My husband will use them but will not deal with the poop ones.
I have considered cloth diapers again and again, but haven’t made the commitment yet. I have another little one coming in December and I’m still weighing the options. I love the environmental benefits and the long-term cost benefits, but they are a little intimidating and the up front costs are prohibitive right now. I’d love to win some to try out, though.

We’re moving in two weeks to my very first apartment with a washer/dryer! Once we get settled, I’m definitely going to try cloth diapers for my 5-month-old son.
I’ve long been convinced of the money savings and benefits for the environment and baby’s tushie. Looking forward to getting started! Winning some diapers would be so helpful!
Kacie´s last blog post…Threshold for donating vs. selling unwanted items
When my husband first suggested cloth diapers when I was pregnant, I thought he was a bit crazy. And after all, I knew I’d be doing most of the changing! But at the same time, I figured I’d probably switch to cloth when she got closer to potty training age. But now that my little one is 4 1/2 months old, and our routine has become very comfortable, the idea of using cloth diapers doesn’t seem so scary. I hate how much we are contributing to landfills with our disposable diapers, and saving money is an added bonus (especially since breastfeeding has not gone as well as planned and I’m already spending extra money on formula, pump rental, supplements, etc. that I hadn’t planned on!)
I have used BG one size with my first little girl since she was about a year old (she’s 2.5 now). I also supplement with prefolds and Bummis Super Whisper Wrap covers to save on the cost. I enjoyed looking through the reviews of the other kinds of diapers and would love to try some different ones for my daughter and the baby we’re expecting in September. I LOVE cloth diapering and am happy to be saving money and keeping lots of disposables out of the landfill.
I’ve been cloth diapering for a few months now, and I LOVE it!
I’m so happy I made the switch! My favorite so far are the one-size FuzziBunz. I think snaps will wear much better than velcro, and since we are hoping to use for more than one kiddo, snaps are our preference!
Although I didn’t start off using cloth diapers, I was encouraged to give them a try after hearing enough testimonies from other moms. I have been so pleased with all aspects of both Fuzzibuns and BumGenius products – absorbancy, ease of use, and fit. And, I feel better about the reduced waste. Babyworks in Portland, OR is an excellent resource for purchasing cloth diaper products and getting expert advise and they offer a return policy. I will start using cloth diapers earlier with my next child.
we use cloth for our 2 boys (21 months and 3 months) and i love the thirsties diaper covers… as well as the bumGenius 3.0 AIOs.
by the way… thanks for this series on cloth diapering… its been great! =)
So, I twittered, tried out the hashtag, but it didn’t work out for me. But I did do it!
I am not currently a CD mommy but have always been curious. After seeing your How-To videos, I realize that cleaning CDs are not as difficult (or smelly) as I had feared! I want to CD to save money!
Thanks for the chance at the giveaway, and THANK YOU for the valuable knowledge.
I have used and liked BumGenius and FuzziBunz. It has been difficult for me to think about giving up the convenience of disposable diapers, but I didn’t like the idea of having only disposable diapers on my child all of the time. So…I bought a few cloth diapers and use them 2-6x/week depending on the week. It has worked well for our family.
Ok, so at the beginning of the week I was still quite skeptical of the whole CD thing and I’m still a little unsure, but the idea is really starting to grow on me. I’ll admit, the main reason is that it will save us a lot of money, but I’ve also started to feel convicted about throwing all of those dirty diapers in a landfill. So, I’ve decided that I’m going to try one cloth diaper a day on my eight month old daughter and work up from there if I like it. Thanks so much Tsh and the other mom contributors for taking the time to explain cloth diapers to us!
We have been cloth diapering exclusively since our first was born in August. We love cloth diapering! We started out using Fuzzi Bunz exclusively, and have recently sold our stash and started fresh with Bum Genius 3.0. We loved both diapers, but the Bum Genius fit our little girl a bit better. I love that these are one size fits all, and the velcro enclosure is easier for us to wrangle on our little girl vs. the snaps from the fuzzi bunz. Thanks for making this a great giveaway!
Heidi´s last blog post…Our Kansas trip!
I use prefolds with a Snappi. It really looks way more intimidating than they are. Like you said, you quickly get the hang of it and luckily for me, Dad wasn’t even put off by these. He can do them just as good if not better than me. I would really love to try another type of diaper but just can’t afford it right now. I would love to win some though! Thanks for doing this segment this week. I think it has been very informative for people that think we are always dunking our diapers and dealing with cloth all day long!
My whole family loves our son’s cloth diapers! We are using OS pocket BumGenius. He is currently 7 months old and we have been using them since birth. I have 2 older daughters who occasionally change his diaper and find it very easy to do. AND they are just so darn cute!!!
I am thinking of switching to CD now that I have read this series – I just don’t know if at this point (14 months) it is worth switching $$ wise. If I won this contest the switch would be a little easier
Jesica´s last blog post…What’s Springing Up…
We currently cloth diaper full time, I have 3 in diapers, we use several fuzzi bunz and the rest are misc. wahm dipers. This has saved me tons of money. I cant imagine buying full time disposables for all 3. Please enter me in the give aways…I would be so excited to win. Thank you for the chance.
We didn’t use cloth diapers till our oldest was about 16 months old, because I was expecting twins. We had all three in cloth diapers and it was very helpful for the budget. We use the cloth diapers from dye- dye diapers.
I am very excited to be trying cloth diapers for the first time! I am pregnant with my fourth and with my third I have been transitioning to cloth by slowly sewing my own fitted diapers and covers (a slow process) I am interested in trying out some different types of commercial diapers to see if the absorbency is improved from my homemade variety. The main reason for the switch is frugality for me!
Amie´s last blog post…Reminder: National Doughnut Day Today! -free doughnuts-
I’m using Happy Heiny’s One-Size pocket diapers. I LOVED them until the past couple weeks. They fit my chubby son really well, never had any poop explosions, and have really cute colors. Now I can’t seem to get them to absorb enough pee….I wish I could try different diapers, but alas, money prevents that! Maybe I’ll win some
I have twin 23 month old toddlers and I’m expecting another little darling in October! I have always wanted to go the way of cloth diapers but was a little overwhelmed with my lack of knowledge of the process and when I heard we were having twins I thought I wouldn’t have time to learn…now with a third baby on the way and this week of info I feel like I am ready to tackle cloth and am thrilled about not having three in disposables (so much money and so much waste!!) I would love to get my stash started!
I’m having a baby in July, and I definitely want to try cloth diapers to save money and to keep disposables out of landfills. These blog posts have been very helpful, thanks!
Jennifer
i wanted to use cloth with my 1st and if i’d known i was going to have 3 more it would have been worth the initial investment. now i’m finished having babies and would still like to give it a try with my last one just to see how they work.
melissa´s last blog post…Reading Thimble Summer
My favorite type of diaper is the prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers. They’re high quality and fit well. Oh, and so economical!
I had a huge learning curve with prefolds, but once I got used to them – I love them! Also, when I first started CD-ing, my first was about 18 mo’s and not cooperative with diaper changes. I definitely didn’t “get” prefolds at that point, and stuck with pockets/velcro (which I also like). But when my second came along, and I tried the Green Mountain prefolds, I definitely got it! Learning to use prefolds on a newborn is MUCH easier than on an uncooperative toddler!
I am due with my first child in August, and am starting to research cloth diapers. My sister-in-law swears by them – my family still thinks I’m crazy so I’m out to prove them wrong about how easy and wonderful cloth diapers are now! I’ve also convinced three of my pregnant friends to give them a shot! Hopefully I’ll win some free diapers to start my stash!
I’m pregnant with our third, and I keep coming back to the cost. I can’t stand the thought of how many diapers I’ll have to buy! My second did us a huge favor by potty training himself (to be like big brother) at 18 months.
I and my hubby are in love with the bamboo velour fitteds from Bum Genius, they are so SOFT and trim. But I also really love our Kissaluvs both the fitteds and contours – they are just so easy to use and fit so nicely.
Oh and I LOVE the Thirsties covers, they have double leg gussets and never leak.
I have been using prefolds with bummis wraps. It has been working really well for us. We also use Proraps which are very reasonable in price which is an important factor for us.
Jessica´s last blog post…Wordless Wednesday-Silly Edition
I didn’t CD my first child, but when I found out I was pregnant with twins, I decided to give CD a try because diapering two with sposies is so expensive. So, for me, cloth diapering is a matter of economy first and environmental responsibility second.
Anne´s last blog post…Just Breathe
I am expecting (first time) and planning to use cloth and absolutely have little idea of what to buy and what is best so this is a very much appreciated resource for me. Thank you!
It’s been many years since I diapered my two, and I used both cloth and disposable. But way back then, I only had prefolds to use…none of these wonderfully designed, fancy pants available now! I had to soak them in the diaper bucket, then wash and toss in the dryer. And only plastic pants to cover them with. I would love to win one of these for my daughter & son-in-love to use…they are planning my first grandchild for arrival next spring.
Two types of cloth diaper products you haven’t mentioned, are the diaper sprayer, and wool covers. I love using wool covers at night for so my baby’s bum can breath better, and I will always have a diaper sprayer for life now. This little tool does a lot more than just clean diapers.
We’ve been talking about cloth diapers for a while now. We want to try them because of the long term savings, the “green” factor, and the fact that cloth diapers often lead to earlier potty training. But the extra laundry really intimidates me. I have a hard enough time keeping up with little man’s laundry now
We did not use cloth with our son, now 2. I considered it many times but just couldn’t bring myself to it. When number two comes around I think it will be time for us to make the switch. Cloth diapering just seems to make sense. Thank you so much for the information on all the different brands.
When I was pregnant with my son, I would fantasize about using cloth diapers. We ended up using disposables because: 1) I couldn’t convince my husband it would be worth it, and 2) I couldn’t find a daycare that would deal with them. It seemed too expensive to use disposables most of the time, and cloth diapers only part of the time. I still fantasize and would love the opportunity to try them out, and hopefully be braver with any future children. The idea of using cloth instead of disposables just feels right to me both from an environmental stand point and an economical one.
I blogged about it too!

Jesica´s last blog post…What’s Springing Up…
Wow! This series has me fully pumped to start CD’ing with our LO come November (when LO is set to arrive). So so excited for it! Thanks for the reviews
Now that my daughter has started solids I can’t wait to try cloth again. Hope I win!!
so far bum genius are my faves. I also liek using fitted diapers lie under the nile with a cover. My favorite cover is the thirsties cover. I really like it better than the bummis.
I use the gDiapers sometimes. The inserts are only $0.09 more expensive than the Pampers we were buying, and I plan on having more kids, so I justified the initial ouch cost factor that way. I also use the prefolds in them as well, to cut down on the cost. I unfortuantly still use disposables alot and he’s recently outgrown the size we have, so I am looking at other methods. I like how easy to use they are though. I might buy the next size and just use the prefolds as I am introducing the potty to him.
I have been seeking out information and learning as much as I can about CDs.. A friend of mine actually put the thought into my head, she has made the switch to exclusively CDing her daughter. My little boy is almost 3 months old and I’m really interested in trying this out! I figure even if we still use disposables when we’re out and about or for night times at first while I get the hang of using CDs during the day, I would already be cutting down on some expenses, doing something that is better for my little guy, and not adding SO MUCH to the garbage can daily! I’m crossing my fingers to win one of this great prizes and be able to try out some of the more expensive types that I might not be able to otherwise afford.
I am due in Nov with our 1st baby… I am definitly going to use cloth diapers. My sister has used them for 2 years on my niece and they really are easy!
I am pregnant with my first baby, so I have not had a chance to use any cloth diapers yet. I love that you are posting so much information on cloth diapering. I really want to do it when my baby is born, but there are always a lot of questions. Your posts have helped me greatly. Thanks.
We just welcomed a baby girl to the world 10 days ago!! I am planning to try gdiapers with prefolds (to save on the expense of the inserts) and I am borrowing a few blueberry newborn diapers which I love (but are soooo expensive!!). It does feel great to not contribute to landfills and to make a healthy choice for my baby and planet! Thanks for the chance to win some diapers!!
When I was pregnant my husband and I considered using cloth diapers. People told us we were crazy and it’s worth it to use disposable diapers. So, for 8 months we’ve been using disposables. I can’t help but wonder about the cloth diapering and consider the “what if…”. I have yet to try them but I’d really like to…I am making small, gradual changes to our everyday living in hopes to help the environment…and I can only imagine the money you save using cloth diapers. I’m curious enough that I’d love to just give it a try.
My daughter is almost 5 months old and we have still not made the switch to cloth diapers. Before she came along, I was sure I’d be doing it by now, but it always seemed so overwhelming. Thanks for these articles–you’ve summarized it so nicely and made it seem so simple. I am considering doing one of those trial things where you get several different types to try and can send back those you don’t like. I will make sure to order one that contains some of these varieties. Thanks again!
we use bum genius all in ones and we LOVE THEM!!

I CD a 20 month old and an 8 week old.
our oldest was exclusively in BumGenius3.0 until last week when I got 3 Happy Heiney and 3 Haute Pocket one size pocket with SNAPS instead of aplix. we’re working those in so she at least has 6 diapers she can wear without taking them off! She gets so excited at diaper change time bc I let her choose what color diaper she wants!
the baby is in prefolds and covers … something I thought I’d never do until I heard about the wonder of SNAPPI! He also has a few Fuzzy Bunz pockets.
My husband and I love doing cloth. we only made the transition about 3 months ago and we both wish we’d done it LONG ago.
We’re planning on using prefolds with Thirsties covers. Still looking for a more heavy-duty option for night time, though. Maybe an AIO?
My husband and I are expecting our first child in September!
My sister-in-law has done cloth diapers with our niece since she was born and loves it and has given me tons of information and advice. For us it’s mainly a financial decision to do cloth diapers, although the thought of all those disposable diapers in a landfill is a driving factor too! I think we will mainly use prefolds with Thirsties covers, but I am open to trying other products as well!
I’m going to be a first time mom in September and I know NOTHING about modern day cloth diapers (I changed my brother’s old fashioned cloth diapers 24 years ago). I want to do the right thing for the environment and for our budget, but I will also be working full time and want something that is easy as well….This week was sooooo helpful!!!
Kim´s last blog post…Super Fantastic Weekend!
I have only been using cloth diapers for a month or so. I have a few different ones, like pockets, AIO and fitted. Somedays I prefer the fitted and somedays the others. For our budget, the fitted suit us. MY mom is knitting us soakers, and I some fleece shorts I got through a swap on DS. For the fitted , I like the Clothmopolitan for the softness. I also have a Sun Seedling that is adorable, a little bulky, but works well.
Thank you for all the info. you have supplied this week. It was wonderful!
My daughter wears almost all handmade fitted diapers but I do have one fitted Thirsties diaper that I absolutely love. It is sooooo soft and very absorbant. I always love when it’s time to use that one!
Off to go tweet!

I started using CDs with my first child because his bottom would get so red from the disposables, even when I changed him every hour. I used several different kind with him, but when my daughter was born, I used Kissaluvs, FuzziBunz and BumGenius and loved them. They are so easy to use and we never had any diaper blowouts with the CD’s!
I would like to try cloth diapers this time because I didn’t with my first child and feel bad about all those bags of garbage! Also, I think I am a little more relaxed about the whole babyhood thing now, so cloth diapers won’t seem so overwhelming.
Wonderful and informative information you have written. I have never used the clothe diapers but, lately I have noticed some irratation on our little pricess’ tush and thought maybe it was time to try them out.
I’ve used cloth part of the time with all 3 of my little ones. I only have one in diapers currently (yay!) and I use mostly BumGenius with him. I use the 1.0′s which I got for a great deal when they came out with the 2.0′s a few years ago. Would love to try the 3.0′s but there’s really no need since our diapers are still going strong. I’ve had to replace some elastic in the legs, but other than that I think they’re a really great diaper, overall! My little guy does seem to have more sensitive skin than my other two kids, and tends to get rashes/irritations in cloth, so I use disposables at night and when we’re out.
I’ve really enjoyed this series–and thanks for the wonderful giveaway!!

I was too scared to use cloth diapers with my daughter, but I took the plunge shortly after my son was born and don’t know why I waited. We use mostly unbleached Green Mountain prefolds with Thirsties covers and have had a lot of success with them. My sister-in-law has also made me several fitted, pocket and all-in-ones that are just wonderful.
I am a mother of an 18 month old and am 20 weeks pregnant with myu second. I have never used cloth diapers before, but after seeing all the amazing options on this post, I’d like to give it a try! I am so sick of running to the grocery store to pick up a pack of disposibles, plus they are expensive… the cheap-o brands have always been disasterous for me so I end up buying pampers! Anyway, I’d like to see what this cloth diapering business is all about!
Since I “work” for Tsh at Simple Kids, I’m not officially entering this contest (but WOW what great prizes!). I wanted to say one of my favorite pockets is a WAHM made pocket called TK Cuddlers. I love the fit on these and the S-hooks are AWESOME!! The inserts are super absorbent, but they do take a little longer to dry than I like. If you are looking to support a WAHM, I highly recommend this company.
Hyena Cart is a GREAT place to shop for WAHM diapering and natural living products, too.

I’ve not used cloth – but after reading this week’s SimpleMom, I’m convinced, esp. b.c of environmental issues.

Thanks for this review! Very accurate (at least for the ones I’ve tried!). I wanted to recommend Snappis to go with the prefolds – soooo much easier and safer than pins! Also, although they don’t seem to be terribly common, I loved the Kissaluvs contour diapers – with Snappis to fasten. These were especially great for the newborn stage. They are very simple to use – they don’t contain elastic, but are rather stretchy so they worked for us just as well as any other elastic diaper, but they fit even better as they stretched to fit baby and they weren’t bulky at all. They dry very quickly – on the line or in the dryer and are very affordable! http://www.kissaluvs.com/countour-diapers.php
Thanks for doing a cloth diaper week! It has been awesome! We started cloth when my first was 10 months old. I was sick of throwing away money everytime i changed my son! We LOVE fuzzibunz! They are my favorite pocket diaper. We also love thirsties AIO! I love that you can add a doubler for nights or heavy wetters. I also love smallspout diapers! Jamie is the best wahm! check out http://www.smallspoutstore.com
We use and love BumGenius 3.0 and have been really happy so far. I committed early and received them one at a time for shower gifts. Starting at about 4 weeks old, we started using the 6 or so we had. Within a month, I’d saved up to buy about 15 more. I’d like to try other systems, too. The way I see it, one-size is a great way to save money and ensure resources are used only once to manufacture diapers.
Btw, I launder and “process” our diapers almost exactly like you do. Tried Soapnuts for diapers the first time recently and like them, too.
That said, we CD about 95% of the time. CD is not all or nothing — each time you use a cloth diaper, you are reducing landfill waste.

I’ve stocked up on several kinds of cloth diapers secondhand so that I can try it all out when our first baby gets here and then sell the junk and buy more of what I really like.
BTW, LOVE your blog, this is the first time i”ve seen it (linked over from Money Saving Mom). Definitely adding to my reader…
Back in the day when my children were small I used Curity diapers that were very long and had to be folded multiple times. I liked folding them and seeing them waving on the clothes line, but it was very time consuming. Now I see my daughter using BumGenius and other types of cloth diapers and I think “we’ve come a long way for our baby (bums)”. ;-D I’d love to win and I know just the right baby bum to cover.
When I was 19 my brother was born and our family used cloth diapers with PINS! Doesn’t that seem old fashioned now? With my first son we were moving and had a lot of upheaval in our life so we went with disposables to make things easier. Now that we’re on to baby #2 my husband is entrenched in the idea of disposables. BUT….if I won a cool giveaway and had some cloth diapers to try I think he’d go for it!
I am commenting for two reasons: 1) I love watching my grandson strut his stuff in blue clothe diapers, and 2) My only daughter loves the (the diapers) and also she asked my to enter the contest. Hope I win.
I haven’t tried cloth. I think I was mostly afraid. That statement sounds so lame to now. A really good friend uses cloth and has inspired me to use cloth as well with my next child. My main motivation is how economical it is.
Hi,
We didn’t use cloth diapers with our first one but started a couple month after our 2nd girl was born. We chose the bumgenius one-size pocket diapers. I like that I only have to buy them once since they grow with my baby. My older one is 3 1/2 now and they still fit her (for the night). I love the colors they come in as well as how easy they are to handle. Even my husband doesn’t mind changing them or washing them
We bought the rice paper to get rid of the messy diapers easier and I am so glad we went with cloth diapers. I wish we would have done it already with our first one but oh well. We are expecting our 3rd one and I can’t wait to cloth diaper her/him as well and don’t have to worry about spending money every other week on disposable diapers!
Thanks for the great giveaway
Jeane
Oh ! absolutely love this series and the giveaway. Thanks so much!
We’re expecting our first one and the reason I want to give CD a try is that
I don’t want my baby to create a mountain of trash right after she is brought
into the world. I hope that my eco friendly choices will somehow rub on her.
Love this series of articles. Very well written and I enjoy the fact that I don’t feel you have an axe to grind, so I can LIKE what is being said : )
I think the cloth diaper industry has made HUGE improvements and I am now much warmer to the idea of using them than I ever was before. My main reason was the difficulty in getting them clean without huge waste of energy/water, addition of chemicals, etc. But now, I have read about many that could simply go in with my regular hot wash, get sanitized, get cleaned, with minimal impact on water/energy consumption. I have always used cloth wipes and I think I have come around to cloth diapers too ; ) Just need a baby now to try them on!
I have been clothing diaper for four months, and I have found it really isn’t that difficult. I chose to use Bum Genius 3.0. I figured if they didn’t work out for us, they would be easy to resale. Switching to cloth has completely cleared up my daughter’s constant diaper rash.
Would love the chance to try another brand!
Thanks for hosting this giveaway! I have used cloth diapers for my first two children, and plan on using them for my third (due any day now!) I use prefolds with Dappi nylon diaper covers, mainly because of affordability. You just can’t get any cheaper, and I don’t mind the washing and care that they require, since we’re at home so much anyway. For trips out of the house, I have a couple of bumGenius diapers that I also love, but due to the cost we only have a few of them.
Pregnant with our fourth I am looking forward to cloth diapers and to my surprise so is my husband. We have always used disposables in the past. I like these not only because my child will not be absorbing something they do not need into their body but also because I am in controll of the supply. We don’t live in the city and monthly trips to a local Walmart for their diapers does not always fall at a time when we need it. This way I can be in controll and do a load of laundry to have more diapers rather than spend the $$$ in gas to get some more.
I have bookmarked the items I want already. Indian Prefolds with some Thirsty covers is what I am planning on using. They are the most economical for my large family. To help support this when grandparents are around though I also bought a pattern for an AIO cloth diaper. Now I just need to get brave and make some.
yay for giveaways! i’ve try to win one of these, but this one i’m really excited about for many reasons. my little wesley is a year now and i just started w/ CD’s at 9 months for him. i was always overwhelmed by the options but then i finally got serious about learning everything i could. i read reviews and asked around and bought a few different kinds of diapers to find out what would work for us. i have found that i LOVE the fuzzibunz one sizes the most. i love how absorbent they are and i agree w/ you on the dry-time… amazing! i am a total cloth devotee now and loving doing it full-time. my husband loves it too, and let’s be honest: the colors are one of the best parts
ok i don’t have a twitter account but i do have a blog and i’ve recommended your blog twice now! once when you posted “one way to keep passion in your marriage” (loved that post and totally agree) and then again at the beginning of this week for the CD 101 b/c i have lots of friends who’ve asked me to help them switch to CD’s. i have forwarded your site to many friends who love it now.
thanks for a wonderful blog who encourages other moms and wives the way you do!

I LOVE bummis super whisper wraps- when I was pregnant I bought a package deal with prefolds & the bummis wraps (froggy pond) and they are awesome! We are saving so much money with them! Prefolds are so worth it- daddy and all grandparents have it down too!:) PS also Love the swimmis from bummis- super cute prints & they are just perfect for the pool!

I have really been enjoying this series! We used cloth with our first, and now again with our second. A huge portion of our stash are diapers I made myself, together with a variety of others, Motherease, Fuzzibunz, Bum Genius, Happy Heiny’s, and one I think gets far too little recognition, Snug to Fit Supreme. It’s a one size flannel fitted with a quick dry flap. This has fit very well on my newborn, as well as a toddler. It’s absorbency is incredible, and it dries quickly either in the dryer or on the line because of the quick dry flap. And the best part is it is very economical, usually running around $10 each.
Thanks for the series and the contest!

Woohoo! i’m so excited about this!!! i used cloth at least partially from my oldest to my 4th child, and gave up on that by my 5th baby- we had toooooo much laundry. However, i’m now pregnant with TWINS and not sure i want to carry the financial load of 3 in diapers!! so… i’m starting over. I just tried a G diaper loaded with preemie prefolds and its PERFECT for my toddler. the only downside is the occasional blowouts. since he still has a lot of those.

This might be just the kickstart I need to try cloth!!!
I’ve really enjoyed reading this week’s series about cloth diapers! My 6 month old daughter is a cloth bum baby, we use Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Size diapers, BumGenius AIO’s, BumGenius One Size and Green Acre Designs. I love every one of them for different reasons but I guess if I had to pick my very favorite it would be the bumGenius One Size b/c well it’s just so easy to use! Thanks Simple Mom for this series, I’ve been sending lots of friends to this site who are interested in cloth and have been overwhelemed by all the info out there, your series has been very streamlined and hits all the important things!
I’ve been using cloth diapers since my DS was born almost 6 months ago. Well, actually he didn’t fit into anything I had until he was about 4 weeks old! Then I was using gdiapers but the fit was difficult for me to get right and my tiny baby flooded the expensive flushable inserts and leaked 90% of the time. Then a friend who has 4+ years experience in CDing offered to get me started with some of her infant supplies. She used prefolds either with or without Snappis (depending on mobility of the infant) with Bummi wraps and FuzziBunz for nighttime. I still don’t want to go the prefold route but we have been very successful for the last 4 months using the prefolds in the FuzziBunz for nighttime. As for daytime, well I’m working on that blog since I need to write down the reviews I have for over 10 different brands that I’ve tried!!!
I use a mix of everything but my favorites are probably Fuzzi Bunz. I have a few fitted diapers from Monkey Dance Cloth that are awesome as well. While I love swaddlebees (I had a few when my fourth was born) I did not find that they worked well for her chunky thighs. I think they are probably perfect for a skinnier babe though and they are oh so soft!
I haven’t used cloth – I’ve been afraid of the upfront costs, the work involved, and the stinky/yucky factor! However, this week’s posts helped answer all of my questions…and I am almost certain I am ready to try cloth! Thank you for all of your input – this week’s posts were SO helpful!
I’m willing to give it a try now that I know there are so many easier to use options than prefolds.
oops i meant to say ‘i’ve never tried to win one of these, but this one i’m really excited about…’
I just started with cloth on my 9 month old. I really like the Gro-baby diapers, they are great when traveling. I love fuzzi buns for night….but only have one. I learned a new fold for my prefolds and I am really liking those too!
I’m now following you on Twitter – here is a copy of my Tweet! http://twitter.com/mommyandpedsRN/status/2044781791
Thanks for the info! We’re expecting our first (a girl) in October and have just begun collecting, one hot pink BumGenius. Can’t wait to try these too!
Well, I’ve always used the prefolds – yep the “cheapo” ones from the store. They work for us, but I’d love to try something new. Your series had so many good things to say about cloth diapering!
Thank you!

easier on the pocketbook and the environment! I can’t wait to try!
tara´s last blog post…ten things i love about you [nm]
I’ve used cloth diapers on my son for almost two years and found I love fuzzibunz the most!
Thanks for a great giveaway. I agree with your assessments, above. My favorite pocket diaper, by far, were the Fuzzi Bunz. (I wanted to love the Bum Genius brand — those colors are so pretty — but the Aplix could sometimes scratch my son’s sensitive skin.) We also used trifolds with Bummi covers for the first couple months of my son’s life. These were really very easy… and all the more so for the fact that we were lucky to live in an area with diaper service. I would use them again, though, even if I were washing at home. (Which I would probably do next time.)
