This year I finally started a family tradition (when I was a kid) with MY family (now that I am a mom). Why now? because I had to wait for my son to go to Kindergarden that happened this month! :)
Our tradition is to have the same breakfast every first day of school. Is Oatmeal with grape juice. I remember to have the same breakfast when I was a kid until I graduated from high school. My mom started this tradition out of convenience. She confessed that she wanted to do something special but never forget what is was. So she kept it simple but it marked my brother's, my sister's and my life. Now I am sharing it with my son, who really appreciated specially when I told him the story about it! :)

[...] Traditions don’t have to be extravagant, intense or require a lot of planning. They can be as simple as reading to your child every night in the same comfy chair, having a movie and pizza night every Friday or discussing things you are grateful for around the dinner table each evening. Traditions are the glue that keeps a family together. We all have very busy lifestyles, and adding a small tradition here or there can make all the difference to your family. [...]

As others have said --- great post.

While not a tradition, my wife and I make a strong commitment that the family has supper together every night. With our four kids age 10 and younger, it's not too hard to do for now.

One tradition we did start several months ago is, on Sundays at supper, each member randomly picks another (draws names, etc.) and says something nice about another member. The kids enjoy getting positive reinforcement and compliments.
