My lovely friend Alli Worthington (@alliworthington) just released her e-book this week, The Smart Girl’s Guide to Twitter. And if anyone should write this book, it’s Alli. She knows social media — and Twitter in particular — better than anyone I know.
I use Twitter for this blog (@simplemom), and I think it’s a fun tool, but I honestly learned quite a bit just from my first glance at her e-book. I’ve been on Twitter since the spring of 2008 (ancient, in the Twitter world), but it can still be confusing to me.
If you’ve wanted to learn Twitter for fun, or if you’ve wanted to better leverage Twitter for your business, this book will help you out tremendously. I really recommend the investment.
In The Smart Girl’s Guide to Twitter, you’ll learn:
- Twitter terminology and culture.
- Twitter Etiquette. Do’s, don’ts and best practices.
- How to follow everyone without getting overwhelmed.
- How to build your network in a smart, honest way.
- How to spot a Twitter spammer.
- How to set up a private, secret account for your close family and friends, and why this is so handy.
- Free Twitter tools Alli uses to do everything from saving money, staying organized, to storing photos on the go.
- How to combine your Twitter account and your blog and integrate Facebook easily.
- How to set up Twitter tools so you can use Twitter to save time, not waste time.
And tons more, truly. I haven’t come across an e-book this thorough and comprehensive! And lucky you, Alli is giving three Simple Mom readers a free copy of The Smart Girl’s Guide to Twitter!
All you have to do is leave a comment on this post, telling me either why you love Twitter, or why you haven’t yet joined Twitter.
This giveaway lasts only for 24 hours, so it ends tonight, Sunday, September 27, at 11:59 p.m.
I hope you win!

I use twitter in the most basic way..just to keep in touch w/ a few (like 11) friends. I just figured out the other day how to send a private message. I was pretty proud of myself, but I’d love to and need to learn more.
I don’t use Twitter because it looks like another almighty time waster. But I don’t really know much about it!
Catherine´s last blog ..Snowflake stamp
I love Twitter and have been using it actively for 7 months as a voice for the magazine I work for (a regional parenting publication in New Jersey). It’s been fun to give moms info they are looking for (lots of local events), and I’ve made a bunch of Twitter friends.
I don’t use twitter because I don’t understand enough about it. I already use Facebook and have a blog I update almost daily. Twitter seems like one more thing to bog me down. I am curious about it, and would love to learn more. It would be awesome if I could use it to save time and promote my blog.
Melissa Lowe´s last blog ..I’m going to be a Firefighter when I grow up!
I’ve been on Twitter for what seems like forever. I started using it out of curiosity. Now I use it for multiple reasons. 1) It updates my FB automagically (handy since they blocked FB at work). 2) Let folks know when I post something new at the blog. 3) Keep up with some of my fave celebs (Nia Vardalos and Ed Norton). 4) quick links to news sources, especially on the environmental side for my job.

Haven’t joined up yet, because of the potential time sucker it could become. I’m interested to read how to use it to save time rather than waste time!

I want to learn more about using Twitter for business.
Seems like a big waste of time and another way to make relationships more “surface” and fake feeling. Sometimes I wonder though, b/c a lot of people seem to be buying into it!
I love twitter because I get the best responses to questions immediately!

I don’t use twitter because I don’t understand it. This e-book would help me out a lot!
I’m on Twitter, but I don’t know enough about it to use it effectively. It’s on my list of things to do … one of many …

I’ve just started using Twitter in the past few months, after using Facebook since spring. I’m still figuring it out . . .

I <3 twitter so much! Keeps me connected with other like-thinking moms and keeps me informed. Fun to watch shows and keep up with tweets at the same time. Love twitter chat parties. Great fun!

I love love love twitter! I love entering contests and twitter helps with that; I love reading about current events through twitter; I love hearing about all the happening’s without having to check everyone’s blog every day (an impossible task); I just love twitter! thanks for the chance – I would love to learn SO much more!!

I have a twitter account, I just don’t really know how to use it! Would love to learn to use it better, because right now it’s confusing some of the lingo and it’s hard to know why I need to use it, but I know it’s a great tool.

i love twitter because it lets me post random stuff, that really isn’t blog worthy. and i can tweet with friends. and it really makes you think about what you say, so you don’t run out of space. there’s a lot i need to learn though!
I have signed up for twitter, but have no clue what to do, I thought it was like facebook but I think it is a lot different.

I’m a self-professed “Twidiot” as I’ve heard it called, but can see it might have some benefits for my business.
I use Twitter to post my health nut comments & articles. I post them on Twitter instead of FB because most of my friends aren’t Tweeting so they don’t know crunchy I really am! I don’t post that much though because 1) time & 2) I don’t really understand all the ins & outs of Twitter yet. As my small business grows, though, I’d like to use it more.
I’m on Twitter but I rarely post–I like reading other people’s tweets! (Stephen Colbert and Jon Hodgman particularly.)
MemeGRL´s last blog ..90 Days and Counting…
I use twitter for my pet portrait business but I don’t really know what I’m doing! I know I can be doing a more effective job than I have been doing but haven’t taken the time to do the research.
I have a twitter account but have only posted about 4 tweets in the last year. I would love to find out more about how to use it to draw people to my business and blog and the ins and outs of social networking….crossing my fingers.

Hi – I would love this book! I haven’t jumped in to Twitter yet, because quite frankly I don’t know where to begin (besides signing up) I would really like to know more about it!

Because I am clueless!
I have a twitter account and it’s fun but it’s another something that takes up time. I have a hard time finding time to BLOG, much less twitter. Add in facebook and email and I give up!
Maybe if I understood it better, it wouldn’t seem like such a hassle.
Cre´s last blog ..We got it
Not quite sure how I feel about Twitter yet. I don’t have enough friends and family on it to make it checking it regularly a worthwhile time investment. But I can definitely see how it would be handy. I like that the number of characters is limited – you have to choose your words wisely.
I have a twitter account, but I only started following people (more like celebrities) this week! That’s all I know what to do right now, lol!
I would say I “like” Twitter. I don’t yet love it, but suspect I could if I knew more about it. So far, it is mostly a guilty pleasure following updates from people whose blogs I read more than anything else.
abbey´s last blog ..Love Thursday: Babies
I have not tried twitter yet for two reasons… I worry about the learning curve (I am EASILY frustrated by technology)… and I worry I would waste a TON of time “following” all the people and groups that interest me! Blogs are bad enough! However, I am curious about how it can be used as a business tool, as I have a new CD coming out this fall, and another for kids in the works- and my business friends tell me it’s a must! So I would love this book to see if it can demystify twitter for me!
I do not use twitter mostly because it looks intimidating to me and I wonder if I have time to incorporate it into my already busy schedule! I’d love to peek into the pages of this book though!
I haven’t used Twitter yet either because I don’t know enough about it and this book looks like an excellent way to learn!
I love using Twitter because it creates connections! But I had no idea how much you can actually do with it!!! Thanks for the chance at this giveaway!!!!
I have avoided Twitter thus far b/c I just dont think I can handle one more thing to check or update. That being said….I have almost changed my mind and like the simplicity of the one liners. I need some major help to get started….thanks for the giveaway opportunity.
I am on twitter, but I often don’t feel like I am using it properly. I could definitely use some help with it. Thanks!
Jackie´s last blog ..More Letter C Activities
I would love to learn how to use Twitter. I haven’t even tried it yet, because it seems very overwhelming to me.
This summer I have become more acquainted with Twitter. I have found it so much easier than getting a bunch of email which I have to sort through. I might not post that often but I love reading about my favorite celebrities, breaking news, and tips on how to be the best Mom and child care provider I can be. I really appreciate what others put out there! I am very interested in how Alli has built her community and flourished in all her endeavors. Please pick me!
I have become a bit addicted to Twitter and Facebook! It has been so nice to have the encouragement from friends in their replies to posts. My addiction hit an all time high while I was in labor a month ago with my 3rd child. I was able to keep all my family and friends updated all throughout my labor and delivery & because of that it was a great experience! So many people were praying for us throughout the day & thanks to those prayers, I had a FANTASTIC labor! No pain!!! LOVE TWITTER!!!
I used Twitter for a while, but then the Ashton Kutcher v. News Channels episode happened and I lost faith in the program. Maybe her e-book will convince me to give it another try.

I don’t use twitter – I got stuck in Facebook & it was *really* hard to get out, so don’t want to go down that road again. Besides, my life’s not that exciting… Unless you want to know I’m in the kitchen, the carpool line…
This may be just the thing I need to get started on Twitter–thanks for the chance!
I use twitter to keep in touch with friends, as a support system, and to bounce ideas off of people. It really is great. I’ve weight-loss buddies who encourage me.

I too am a twitter oldie, heck I was twittering while in labor with my second born in July of 2008! Love me some twitter!
Twitter has made it possible to get to know blogging friends even better. I also love being able to ask questions and getting feedback right away. It is also a fun way to take a break from the stay-at-home mom job.
Smiles!
I use it, but I don’t love it. Perhaps reading these tips would help!
I love twitter…such a fun way to communicate!
I love Twitter for many reasons. One – there are sooo many great contests! Two – So many great friends I’ve made in the last year! Three – tons of tips and info. I love Twitter! (I’m following you too – @pricousins)

I joined twitter, but I’m so confused how to do it, that I kind of avoid it-completely. I don’t know half the people that all of a sudden follow me-I don’t say anything on there!
It would be fabulous to win this book and learn some great media tips and tools…what a great giveaway, thank you!
I’ve been using Twitter since March and I love it because of the ease of use and the quick way of getting news and information. Plus I have won several giveaways, and that’s awesome. I have found out about different events and blogs that I might not have known about otherwise.
npbradshaw´s last blog ..yikes!
I don’t twitter because I don’t really “get it.”
I would love to learn more about Twitter. Using a facebook fan page for my business has been so much easier for me to “get” than twitter and I am sure there is a lot that I could gain from reading this book. Thanks!
This is so timely, it’s almost scary. I’ve been getting these creepy, scandalous people trying to follow me and it makes me question whether I really do want to be on twitter. But I have connected with some great women, companies, and bloggers. I guess like everything else it can be a blessing and a curse. Thanks for the chance to win this book- I need it
I have been using twitter for a few weeks after being in charge of our organizational account at work for a week. It has become another way to connect with bloggers and other women I love to follow and to share little things that may not end up as a blog post, but could be interesting to my followers.

I love how I feel like I’m having an actual conversation when I need to have one. It’s quick and easy. And of course, I love it when my Tweet Peeps make me laugh

Heather of the EO´s last blog ..Betrothed
I have not yet joined Twitter because I feel like I don’t have the time. I really don’t know how to use it. I often think about signing up but it seems like that would just be one more thing to add to my to do list everyday (to tweet.) If it really would help me I’d love to know. I am a blogger and I always love to write but I feel like I overextend myself sometimes, I can hardly keep up with my Facebook account. I’d love to win a copy of this.

I haven’t joined yet cuz I haven’t yet seen the value of it. Hey, I’m all ears…I mean all eyes and would read her E-book!
I have not yet joined Twitter because I have not had time. I really want to, but just graduated from nursing school while trying to juggle family life and Tweeting has taken a back seat. My husband is really big into Twitter and has been trying to get me to do it for a long time. Now that I am finished with school, I want to join but find it overwhelming learning all about it. This book looks like a perfect thing for me. As a Mom, Pastor’s wife, and nurse, I see how Twitter can be beneficial and time saving! I’m going to join as soon as I get a moment to figure it out.
I actually love Twitter for many various reasons. I am an amateur photographer, and I like being able to keep up with some of my favorite photographers. I am often able to find out about great deals before people who don’t use Twitter. Of course, just keeping up with my friends on one handy dandy page is nice. And being able to get encouragement in my daily life as a mom to a toddler.

I don’t twitter very much yet. I signed up for an account about two months ago when the Iranian “revolution” was heating up. I thought it was neat to read “raw news.”
I find Twitter to be soooo limiting in some ways and soooo overwhelming in other ways. I have had a Twitter account for several months, but don’t really use it. 140 characters is just too limiting. And I just don’t understand how Twitter users have found reputable Tweets to follow. I have tried giving Twitter a try, but don’t see any benefit for me that Facebook, LinkedIn and email don’t already do!

I have been checking out twitter but I must admit I am not getting it. But I also don’t have the time as a SAHM to really check it out and research it more. I have been using more for entering contests. So this e-book could come in handy! Thanks for the chance to win it.
I love Twitter because it’s neat to find out who’s online and then connect.
But I’m seriously Twitter challenged. lol
Janel´s last blog ..Life’s About Changin’
I signed up for twitter a while back but didn’t do anything with it–just seemed overwhelming to me to get a handle of how to really, really use it without just wasting my very little free time. I would love this ebook—I hope I win!!! I’d love to really start using it.
Angel´s last blog ..HersheyPark with the Billses
I don’t Twitter yet … I just don’t see the benefit of it over Facebook. To be honest, I haven’t properly explored it either. If I won a copy of the book, I might be convinced to join the dark side of Twitter.
My daughter got me interested in Twitter. I thought it was another way for us to keep in touch in a fun way. I hear hints and bits of information on the Internet about other ways of using it. I like the idea, for instance, of knowing the best place to find deals or coupons, etc. Also following interesting people. I know there’s much more to know and it looks like your friend, Alli has put it all together for us … Thanks for the opportunity to get a great FREE copy!!!
I hope I win too. I am a non-twitterer due to already being overwhelmed with facebook and how time consuming (read time wasting) it can be at times. Would love to know more about it and how to integrate it with Facebook
I just don’t get it- and haven’t taken the time to figure it out. Your post has great timing for me and others apparently too! Thanks!
I just signed up for twiiter and I am excited about learning how to use it effectively!
Thanks!
Honestly, I’ve become a dinosaur when it comes to technology. There was a time when I kept up on the current stuff, but now it all seems to be moving so fast. I would love to have a consice overview of Twittering. I haven’t used it simply because it seems so foreign. This book seems like just the thing for this ol’ gal in the dark ages. Please help me find my way out…;)

I joined twitter and quickly became confused and overwhelmed, so I sort of gave up… I would love to know more!
Ellen´s last blog ..Enjoying the Simple
I’ve avoided Twitter partly because I don’t really understand it and partly because facebook takes up any free moments I have. This book sounds fabulous!
I’ve been using it for a few months but I’ve just recently started using it regularly. I like it but don’t use it more than once or twice a day.
Tabitha (From Single to Married)´s last blog ..Married to An Older Man
I haven’t tried Twitter yet b/c I’ve felt like trying to tweet and do Facebook would be overwhelming. Didn’t know you could synchronize somehow…guess I could use the ebook!
As others have said, I just don’t get Twitter, and Facebook has been a HUGE timesuck. I would like to learn how to better utilize these tools in a way that is productive! I LOVE the idea of having a special secret account for close friends and family. Thanks for the opportunity to learn this info. Sounds like a fabulous e-book!
I haven’t twittered yet because I feel too old to learn. I was acutally a computer major in college but social networking is beyond me!
I haven’t been brave enough to try twitter. Still pretty much a newbie to fb. Have a great week!

I like Twitter. I have gotten tons of great deals. Just the other day I received a code for 3 months free on Picnik. It’s only $5, but hey, $5 is $5 and I love picnik.
Thanks for the giveaway, I would love to learn more about Twitter.

Liz@HoosierHomemade´s last blog ..Meals ~ September 28 – October 4
I love Twitter. The thing I love about it most is horrible to admit, but it’s entertainment during downtime at work.
I have learned TONS though, as I follow tons of great people that share great information. And that’s what I enjoy most about Twitter.
I love twitter because of the instant connections anytime, anywhere and across the planet. I wonder if they have twitter in space ?
I haven’t gotten into Twitter because it seems a bit ridiculous and over-the-top…do I really need that many updates that often? Also, because I have a bit of an addictive personality, and I already waste too much time on facebook. Twitter could be the death of me (or my productivity).
Rae´s last blog ..A Recommendation
I’ve only been using twitter for a few months regularly but I love it. I love the fact that it keeps me connected to the world and my friends without me ever having to leave the house. I love the fact that it’s almost an instantaneous update and that I know what is going on so quickly. I just love twitter.
Teresa´s last blog ..Tripping with a meal plan
I’m on Twitter, but I’m not finding it as user-friendly as Facebook at all! I haven’t figured out how to make the conversations less one-sided or to read back-and-forth conversations yet… I’m sure there’s a way! Hope I win a copy of the e-book so I can make better use of what must be a very good resource.

I joined for a Crocs contest…but never updated after that. I’m scared of Twitter! I’m about to join actively to help advertize my fledgling (two points for the bird reference) cupcake biz. I hope I win, too. =)
I love Twitter because it is (or so I think) the perfect outlet for my random thoughts while allowing me a window into the ambient intimacy of the lives of others. It’s also a little (or a lot) ADD, so that’s cool too. I also really love seeing the faces of the twitterers. I’d love to learn from Alli.

Hi, I’ve been downright scared of Twitter but I’d love to learn about it from someone who knows! Thanks for the giveaway, Hope to learn more!
Karen
I just signed up for twitter last week. I have no idea what to do now. I could definitely use a guidebook!
I like Twitter, but would like to learn more about it. I’m one of those that feels like they are hanging on to the tiger’s tail with this stuff!
I really enjoy Twitter but want to learn more. I feel like I do tend to waste time. But I love being a part of the the Twitter culture and having so much info at my fingertips all the time.
I love it for finding out who is posting to their blog. I especially like it when someone tweets the title of a new blog post as it’s a quick way for me to browse new posts and only click through to those I’m interested in.
I haven’t joined twitter yet because I’m afraid of the extra work it might involve. But with three little ones age 2 and under and a move away from extended family coming up, I’m wondering if it could be a useful tool to keep us all in touch?
P.S. Hmmmm……I’m not sure why my husband’s photo came up when I posted this – sorry!! It must be from an old blog of his…
Head to Gravatar.com if you want to change your photo. It’s attached to email addresses.
I like Twitter and have fun following certain people, but I would love to know how to use it better. I’d love to find a way to use it to my advantage as a teacher for my classroom as well!
This is timely. I don’t Twitter because I’m so technologically challenged, it’s ridiculous. However, I’ve just this past couple of weeks resolved to “get with it.” To answer the question….I don’t “get it.”
I do have a Twitter account, which I’ve checked in on maybe 10 times since it was created 6+ months ago. Oddly, I am both slightly intimidated and apathetic about it. Like others, I feel like I don’t have the time for it. Also, I feel as though it could become addictive in a unproductive and unhealthy way. I’m trying hard to balance the time spent in the web world vs. my own world (ie where my kids and husband reside!)
I love twitter because I can follow all my favourite role models on there – both famous and not famous.

I thought Twitter would be just one more frivolity , but I’m rethinking that as I’m learning more about how it can be a smart tool.
I so need this book to help me learn to market my new book. Please, please, please pick me! I am techno-challenged enough as it is.
