Q&A: What’s The Best Spot in Your Home?

by a guest writer on October 21, 2008

in making your home a haven

This week’s Q&A Tuesday comes from Emily, a stay-at-home mom to two and living in Florida. When she’s not eating bon-bons, she blogs about simple and frugal living at Remodeling This Life.

Emily asks:

“Where is your favorite spot in your home, and why?”

My thoughts:
Great question, Emily.  Can my answer be between my sheets, fast asleep in bed?

I guess aside from that, my favorite place is out on our balcony.  We’ve got a beautiful view of the bay where the sun sets into a rainbow of color.  On the left, we’ve got a hill of shabby-yet-quaint single-unit homes that have been around forever; on the right, we’ve got our city skyline that hugs the bay and twinkles at night.  I love the cool early morning, cup of coffee in hand, and Moleskine journal on the table.  Bliss.

Alright, your turn – I’d love to hear your answers.

The reading chair. Pink recliner that doesn’t fit in with the decor anymore. But both kiddos can cuddle with a parent who’s reading. Happy place. ;)

Well my house is so small that the whole thing almost qualifies as one single spot. But I do love sitting on my couch, watching my kids run around. Not only do I love the color and style, but it’s all the more satisfying considering that I had been lusting after the €700 model at Ikea for ages, before finding it on Ebay for €43. That one spot just seems to sum up my life nicely to me: frugality, chaos and coziness. Great question Emily- thanks for making me think a bit!

@ Mike – You and my daughter would get along really well. I am sure that would be her answer too :)

@Avlor – I think sometimes it’s the out of place, non coordinating furniture that is the best – most loved and comfortable and with sentimental value. Your chair sounds perfect!

@Kelly – I love that your answer has to do with how your spot makes you feel and what you can do from there. It really is what matters. And what a deal!!

My craft room, which I selfishly took over last year. I can nurture myself in there, and my son and husband wander in and out to visit with me. Sometimes my son will come in and “be busy” with me from his own project drawer. On a bad day, they know if I’m in a cranky mood and in the craft room, DO NOT DISTURB. I can work myself out of a bad mood by creating something and come out a better mama and wife!

@Gracia, ah yes, a sunny kitchen is perfect!

My favorite place would have to be in the hammock on the porch, on a nice sunny day, resting with my DF (Darling Fiance). When we went on our first vacation this past July, we fell asleep in a hammock on the beach off the Bahamaian Islands…laying on the hammock outside always takes me back.

Hi Emily, my favorite spot is this giant chair in a room that no one goes into. It’s not that quiet (my neighborhood rarely is), but it’s quiet enough and I get my best work done in that chair. This site is really pretty. Thanks for bringing me along.

Wingback chair … spent four plus long, hard years breastfeeding in that chair … so many memories … wrapped up in the warmth of that chair at three am in the morning, during winter, watching for other lights to come on in homes on the hill, knowing other mums were up doing the very same ..

Each birthday I take a pic of my sons in that chair – watching them grow now.

Can I say right here at my desk where my lovely computer is? I’m not terribly happy with any location in our home although the new bed helps a lot, but… I really don’t know. I’m sticking with my computer. I think that’s a sign our home could use some work… or we need to move.

We have a nice great room/living room where our computer hutch is. I’d qualify this as a favorite since I spend so much time here. :) But what I love about it is that I right near my husband if he’s watching a ball game or playing with our daughter in her play area behind the couch. Toblerone, your balcony with a view sounds divine! Thanks for the Q, Emily! :)

My favorite spot is actually in the garage! I have a small area set up as my paint studio. I love that I can leave projects in process to complete at my leisure – with 2 young kids it’s a blessing to not have to pull all the supplies out and clean the area up each and every time I want to create.

Inside, I would have to say my kids bedrooms where we read our bed stories each night.

My first thought was under the covers; I love my bed! Though the surroundings need a lot of work.

Next place is our front patio. My husband built the fence and laid the stones; it’s very green and private, yet feels open and so relaxing. We have two adirondack chairs painted deep red and I bought a sturdy plastic table and chairs for summer dining. Summer mornings with coffee and breakfast in the sun are divine.
I only wish we could be out there all year long!

Oh goodness… great question btw, it really makes one think (and be thankful).
We have a small-ish apartment that we just moved into (finish unpacking this weekend) and we’re still settling in and filling things out so I haven’t picked a ‘favorite spot’ yet. But now that the den isn’t full of boxes I think I just need a comfy chair at my desk for it to be my favorite. My desk is right next to a big arcadia door so I can watch the wind blow through the sycamore trees and my DH’s desk is katty-corner from mine so we can be doing different things but still be together. I love that.

Definitely in the living room, on the sofa with my boyfriend and our sons. We all four squeeze onto the sofa and cuddle together, watching movies or talking. Even when the boys are sitting on the floor playing together and the boyfriend and I are the only ones cuddling, it’s my favorite; any time the four of us are together as a family.

It all depends on the time of year. In the summer, I love sitting on my front lawn watching all the kids ride bikes and play. In the winter. I love to sit in front of the fire when we are getting ready for the day. In between, I spend a lot of time on the floor, playing with toys and of course the kitchen. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

My favorite spot in our home is my bed. We have one of those special memory foam beds. On our first day of mattress shopping, my husband sprawled out on this foam mattress and pronounced that our search was over. It was like a bride looking for the just the right wedding dress. He loved it right away an was unconvinced to try anything else. And boy am I glad! Every night I lay my body down in that bed and I say to my husband: “Guess what?” And he says, “I know. This is the best bed in the world.” And it is. Truly. Dreamy.

My favorite place right now is the back porch. It is covered and I can sit and watch my kiddos play in the huge yard or sit and enjoy a peaceful moment in the morning watching the birds scurry from tree to tree. During the Christmas holiday it is the living room reading books, sitting by the fire and admiring our tree.

My favorite place is at the desk at the computer. It’s the place where I get the most work done and can connect with friends and family through email. So many good things have happened on my computer at that desk that I have fond feelings for it. Otherwise, I love my kitchen. We live in a small apartment building on a college campus and our apartment is on the third floor so we can see over the back wall into the farmer’s field next door. When spring comes, I open the window and the breeze blows in and I can smell the things growing.

V. Higgins, where do you live? I’m so jealous. It sounds so idyllic!

Hehe, it’s a pretty nice apartment complex in Northern California. Our building is actually kind of tucked away which I really enjoy, it’s a very windy area for most of the year and it’s really nice to hear the wind blow through the leaves. I’m constantly opening the windows when we’re home. :-P

For me it would either be a toss-up between my sewing/crafting room and my kitchen area – our kitchen is open with our eating area and a larger somewhat undefined space. Plenty of room for W to spread out and play and the entire family to enjoy time together.
