Q&A Tuesday : What Are Your Top 3 Essentials When You Leave the House With Preschoolers?

by Tsh on February 17, 2009

in kids

I love longtime reader Sarah Park’s submitted question for today’s Q&A Tuesday. We’re elbow-deep in packing for our return overseas, so right now I’m reminded of how much traveling light is high on my priority list – whether we’re on a 10-hour flight, or whether we’re hitting the park for an afternoon picnic.

Sarah, co-founder of Pear Budget, asks:

What are the three most indispensable items you pack when heading out with preschoolers?

Yep, pick only your top three – and diapers are excluded here.

I’m looking forward to seeing your answers!

SNACKS
SNACKS
AND SNACKS!

Despite what happens, if a toddler has a raisin in his/her mouth, it is less likely they are unhappy. (At least that pertains to my children)
If the snack pack is full, I would say cell phone and keys.

1. Snacks–more than I think I’ll need; and a variety of sweet, salty, crunchy, squishy.
2. Magnadoodle–keeps either girl (4yr & 20mo) occupied.
3. Ring Pops–they are the reward of choice in our house & keep even the crankiest child happy when you really need to finish running errands.

All I need is a healthy snack for the tots, some good quality baby wipes and something to keep them occupied with (a Richard Scarry book has enough drawings/detail to keep a small child busy for quite a while – if we’re going to a park, all we need is a ball! Extra points if you can bring the dog!)

Three things you must take for a preschooler:

1. Change of clothes (shirt, bottoms, undies)
2. Baby wipes – for cleaning up all types of messes
3. Medical kit (thermometer, fever reducer, allergy tabs, EpiPen, bandaids, neosporin)

I’ve discovered with my two kids that they will always get dirty – and if the baby wipes won’t clean up the clothes, they must be changed. (Drinks get spilled all.the.time. – and potty training accidents happen when you are least prepared.)

I’ve also discovered that it never fails – I discover one of the kids is running fever when we are one hour from home on an errand. I make sure to keep a medicine kit stocked just in case – also, since my son has allergies and hives and doesn’t tolerate bug bites, we always have his EpiPens with us, as well as benadryl – that way we can take care of things no matter where we are.

Since I always carry my cell phone in my purse, that’s not included in my preschooler’s list. ;-)

With my oldest, it would have been a change of clothes, first aid kit and baby wipes, because he was insanely accident-prone and in need of patching up. Now with my youngest, it’s a snack (for him) coffee (for me) and my cell phone so the big guys’ school can get in touch if needed.

1. plenty of snacks
2. water
3. a special toy ( that you keep in your diaper bag for that sudden meltdown that’s bound to happen)

1. Diaper (for the youngest) and babywipes.
2. Snack and drink (banana/cookies and chocolate milk or juice in little tetra bricks)
3. A toy/book

In the car I always have a bigger bag containing more of the above as well as a change of clothes, plastic disposal bags, small first aid kit etc.

I haven’t done it in a while, but in hindsight I wish the essentials I never left home without had been (1) a Zen-like, being-in-the-present mindset, (2) an easygoing, can-do attitude, (3) the ability to enjoy all the little caught moments in the daily round and know that the challenging times were all part of it, too.

Well, I have to say it’s much easier getting out of the house with a 3-year old than any other age thus far, but my top three things are:

1. toy (usually more than one because he can never settle on just one)
2. snack
3. stroller (which I always keep in the trunk so I don’t forget to pack it)

Mommy’s top three things are:

1. cell phone
2. credit card
3. snack (mommies get hungry too)

I was going to say nappy(diaper), diaper bag (for smelly used nappy) and wipes but I will instead go for wipes, band aids, lollypops( for treats or distaction if needed)

Assuming wipes are included with the diaper,
For Maya:
1. Water
2. Snack
3. Her favorite small dinosaur toy from the dollar store.

For me:
1. Phone
2. Wallet
3. Keys
