How to Transform a Kid into a Superhero

My nephew’s birthday was last week, and we wanted to make something homemade as a gift. Chickpea rolled up her sleeves and helped me make her cousin a cape and mask from an old pillowcase. I found the idea here. Here’s what we did:

Our supplies were

  • an old pillowcase
  • scissors
  • ribbon
  • fingerpaints
  • needle and thread (not shown)

Step 1 – Cut the pillowcase lengthwise into two pieces, and cut off the cuffed hem – this will be your mask.

Step 2 – Cut out eye holes.

Step 3 – Have fun with fingerpaint.

Step 4 - Attach ribbon for straps to the cape and mask, and voila – a new identity.

Enjoy -it’s frugal and it worked for us.

Cooool. I was just brainstorming this morning as to how I could make a cape for my son. He currently ties his towel or blanket around his neck.

Thanks for the tutorial.

I am so sewing challenged, it is scary. How did you attach the string to the pillowcase for the cape? I am having a superhero birthday for my 3 year old in a couple weeks and I thought it would be fun to let all the kids make capes. I don’t really want to spend $20 a piece for each kid. This idea is perfect! I just need to figure out how to attach string to the cape. Thank you! I hope to hear back from you.

What a fun idea! I bought my kids capes from http://www.powercapes.com this holiday, but I’ll have to give this a try!
