Go Green While Drinking Water

by Tsh on January 31, 2009

in giveaways

This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Jill – congratulations!

Eco-friendly water bottles are everywhere these days, which is great with all the BPA news in recent years.  BioGreen Bottles are biodegradable sports bottles, which means they will break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass within a reasonable amount of time in the natural environment.

Unlike corn based plastic, BioGreen Bottles are recyclable and are not affected by heat or light. They degrade into biogas and a biomass that actually adds nutrients to the soil.  They’re some of the most environmentally responsible plastic bottles on the market.
water bottle

So, in a nutshell, these are bottles that actually help the environment in several ways – they are made from recycled materials, they completely break down into beneficial compounds in a short amount of time, and they are also 100% recyclable if they do wind up at a recycling station.  And they’re BPA, DEHA, and DEHP-free.

One Simple Mom reader will win a family pack of water bottles for the whole family!

Here’s How To Win:

1. Leave a comment on this post, answering this question – What do you think is the biggest environmental concern these days?

2. To get a second entry – and a second entry on all the giveaways this week – subscribe to the Simple Mom feed and email me the movie quote at the bottom of any post in your feed reader or email inbox (there is only one quote for all the giveaways). The amount of waste that a single family produces could be greatly reduced byt just taking some care when purchasing.

I think waste is a huge problem, and the idea that so many things are disposable. We need to reuse much more. Freecycle is a great thing. I know that I suffer from “out of sight, out of mind” and throw things away too easily. Less stuff = less clutter = less waste.
Thanks for all the fun giveaway!

What do you think is the biggest environmental concern these days?

That greed, and what the scientific community has been able to create, have created such damage to our Earth. And we aren’t willing to make dramatic changes to stop doing it.

avatar Gina

The lack of recycling. I think it should be the law! For most people, it’s not any harder than throwing it away.

People not believing that all our effort combined will make a difference.

avatar Nicole

I read recently where the average American produces 1 ton of waste each year. That’s just outrageous and needs to change.

avatar Annie

Lots of things, but I’m currently thinking a lot about cutting down on the amount of trash I throw away. The packaging required for a smallish kitchen item: cardboard, styrofoam, AND plastic. That’s just nuts.

avatar Joanna

Not being a responsible steward of the resources given to us, whether it’s the amount of waste produced, the chemicals we add to the land, the treatment of our animals or any of the other myriad of ways we seem bent on using to destroy this planet! Is that cheating? That I didn’t pick just one?

The waste of everything and how we think we HAVE to HAVE more, more, more and it is never enough.

avatar Rachel B.

trash

avatar Mary

i don’t know…there’s so much garbage and waste it’s crazy.

avatar V. Higgins

Definitely how to conserve resources. There is a lot of evidence that CO2 is not a problem but I still want to take good care of the world that God has given us to steward over and the bodies of me and my family.

avatar shannon

I think where food comes from is huge.

avatar jessica

trash!

avatar Serena

Pesticides. They get into everything.

avatar Shelly

Finding a clean replacement for oil-based transportation.

avatar Melissa

not really sure what the biggest issue is, but accumulating and consuming creates lots of trash and all that has to go somewhere.

avatar Clara S.

Great question. I think the biggest concern is all the trash we as a society produce (our family included).

Clara S.´s last blog post…Puzzle love

avatar Aari

Global warming.

I like how green thinking has started to alter consumerism. The decision is no longer just can I afford it & is it cheap enough. People are more aware of the trade-offs of buying decisions that go beyond price, and the virtue inherent in NOT consuming.

avatar Rebecca

I think I speak along with a large portion of other commenters: waste. I’m amazed at the differences between some of Europe and the U.S. in regards to trash/recycling. From what I understand, they have to divide everything out – glass, plastic, bags, food waste, etc. Here in our town we throw everything together in our recycling bin. At least in that one area, we may have a lot to learn from Europe.

avatar Kristia

oooh where do you begin…a big concern in my local area is air quality. I live in an area where there are lots of highways with lots of trucks and our air quality is some of the worst in the country and I don’t live in a huge metropolis.

I’d have to agree with so many that said the amount of waste this nation produces. Everything is disposable. It’s cheaper to buy a new item than have the old one repaired. Technology is obsolete just months after it comes out as the greatest new thing. Everybody wants newer and better.

Definitely going to ditto the waste.

avatar Heather

I think it’s water quality.

avatar Gretchen Ree

Our dependency on non-renewable energy, fossil fuels, etc. Especially when solar and wind energy are so readily available!

avatar Cynthia

I think it’s one of our biggest environmental concerns is our water or shortage of water. I think we’re doing a good job with conservation, but there needs to me more done.

avatar Michelle Meyer

I would have to agree with some of the others that recycling, or lack thereof, is a huge problem. Where I live in CO, we have to PAY to recycle! Having moved here from CA, it’s an appalling thought to me.

avatar Conni

The first thing I think of (and wish I had thought this way 10 years ago) is our throw away society. We get rid of things that are perfectly fine and abuse our world with things that will never go away.

avatar Kimberly

I feel like the biggest concern is how much we collectively use, but each of us individually often won’t make a commitment to change our behavior because we think it won’t make a difference.

avatar Anna

i feel like the biggest concern is that we have a short attention span and our collective concern seems to be shifting towards money and away from making positive changes for the environment. I am concerned that unless we can compromise and do both, we always be more concerned with money

avatar Sara

Too much waste and not enough people recycling.

avatar Laine

I think it would be waste. We live in such a wasteful society!! People have an abundance of so much that they don’t even think twice about throwing something out that is still good.

Laine´s last blog post…Name that Photo =)

avatar Kathleen

I think the biggest concern is how much we consume which also kind of goes with how much we waste.
Kathy

avatar Allie

Excessive stuff, leading to excessive waste.

avatar Sara

The need to have so much stuff! I try really hard to reduce, reuse, recycle and when my children were bombarded with new “things” at Christmas (which they hardly touch now) I realized we have way too much stuff! And the packaging that some of the toys come in is so wastefull

avatar jennifer

the biggest environmental concern these days is apathy.

avatar Elaine

In the US, I think the biggest concern is that so many things are made to be disposable these days. Even things like appliances that used to be made to last 40 years now only last 10 at the most. Diapers and take-out cartons are just the tip of the iceberg (trash heap?).

Elaine´s last blog post…Miracle babies

avatar Therese

Too much waste, for example in packaging

avatar liz

the biggest environmental concern seems to be that no one is really all that concerned.

avatar Charissa

We all need to make the best use of what we have to reduce waste and be good stewards of what God has blessed us with.

Charissa´s last blog post…Gotta Love Those Links: January 29th

avatar Kristen

It is hard to narrow it down, but I think the biggest environmental concern is that in some communities it is still difficult for people to buy local foods and recycle. These are two things that families can do EVERY DAY to help the environment and community leaders need to make it happen!

avatar Jessica B.

Wastefulness. We can reuse so much more than we do.

avatar melissa

i think that consumerism and greed is the greatest threat of our world today. thanks for the contest.

avatar Lisa

SO MUCH WASTE! I would stinking love to be able to shop at a bulkfood store (like in Amish communities) and not have packaging to contend with each time I came from the store. Our society is wasteful in so many ways. It has been interesting to see, however, how the economy has begun to change that mindset a bit.

avatar Briana

Overall excess and waste. Food, clothing, water, energy…all of it. We use too much of all of it and it leads to all kinds of problems.

Briana´s last blog post…Here’s what my boys are doing this snowy/icy day…

avatar Kerri

I can’t pretend to really know what I’m talking about when it comes to the environment but here in America probably one of the biggest environmental challenges we face is the amount of waste due to our own over-consumption that ends up rotting in our landfills. But if I were to think “globally”, I’d say other countries aren’t able to access clean water and that’s something we take hugely for granted in the U.S. Read up on the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe. It’s so sad that innocent people are facing the collapse of their country due to the gross negligence of their own president/dictator.

avatar Lisa

I would have to agree with most who have already posted – over-consumption, which stems from greed, wanting more, bigger, faster, newer, etc.

avatar Cindy

I’m most concerned about global warming & all we are doing as consumers to add to the problems.

avatar thursday

Wow, that’s a difficult one to answer. My first thought is global warming – wide-reaching effects. Although I’ve spent years thinking about recycling and landfills, I have put less thought into how the things that I do affect the earth’s climate. Ok, I’m actually feeling overwhelmed just thinking about it right now!

i think deforestation is huge and it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. and if you think about it so many of the problems we have now can be attributed to deforestation. i have a friend from college biking, yes, on a bicycle, from paraguay back to the US to bring awareness to the deforestation that’s happening at the san rafael reserve in PY. http://www.rideforthetrees.com

avatar Amber

I agree with so many of the comments above…there is so much waste! I’m trying to do my part by using reusable shopping bags. In fact using those cute bags at every shopping trip makes me quite happy…much more stylish than a plastic bag:) My next step was to get a reusable water bottle so I’m excited about this giveaway. If only everyone could just do one little thing…

avatar Kelli

As most commenters so far have said, I also believe excess is our biggest environmental concern. We have (and want) far too much stuff! Less stuff = less waste = less environmental damage!

I suppose the reason that is the common answer here is the fact that we are all Simple Mom subscribers!

avatar Stephanooch

What scares me the most is how quickly we are depleting all of our planet’s resources.

avatar Jessica

I’d second the waste issue along with the huge amounts of toxic stuff we dump EVERYWHERE. It’ s amazing how much toxicity we are spreading around and nobody is even paying attention until it will be too late…

avatar Rose

All the garbage that we generate is probably the biggest environmental concern, in my mind. Where do we put it, is it safe, will it leach into our soil and back into our food and water supplies? It’s a mess and we need to figure it out and be good stewards of the planet we’ve been given.

Rose´s last blog post…I spent a boatload of money today, sigh…

We are terrible consumers. Greed and materialism lead to all sorts of nasty things for our environment.

avatar Jessica

Globally, global warming and lack of fresh drinking water
as an American, waste and lack of recycling

avatar Laura

I agree with other posters about our sense as a whole in America that we “need” so much. We want so much and have so much, yet we feel the need for more. And we have so much excess, and so much ends up being wasted and thrown away. I feel like if we all could live a little simpler and think more about what we really “need” we would see what it means to be content.

Too much waste. And we don’t realize how much we waste nor do most people care.

I think over-consumption is the biggest concern. We just don’t need so much STUFF!

avatar Valerie

I with those who think all the waste is a huge concern.

avatar terri mac

Our reliance on the automobile for travel.

avatar Amber T

i would agree with many and say waste. i also think we all drive cars that are way too big….and unnecessary.

avatar Lauren

Our biggest environmental concern in my opinion is finding alternative energy that is sustainable. Americans consume way too much nonrenewable energy and it’s killing our planet and our wallets.

avatar adrianne

I would say my biggest personal concern is the lack of understanding/knowledge of our constant over-consumption and under utilization of programs that will offset such overuse.

Waste. We throw too much away and don’t spend enough time recycling.

avatar TheresaB

Like most others here. . . I believe our disposable way of life is our greatest threat to the environment. We contaminate land and sea with what we no longer want to deal with. Eventually, it’s all going to catch up with us.

In the western world, waste. In most other countries, clean water. I actually think we could do something about it, but there’s so much information from so many different sources, it gets overwhelming and we do nothing (or very little).

I echo the thoughts of so many on here when I say that it is the constant need for “MORE” in our society. my parents don’t recycle & it drives my CRAZY-I argue with them every time I go over there-I even told them just to put things in bag & I’ll take them home to recycle them when I visit! Greed… always wanting more, not enjoying the things we have. Change needs to begin with taking personal responsibility for our lifestyles and making simple changes that could have profound effects… for ex., I need to go and turn off the 2 extra lights I’ve got on right now!

avatar Tracy

I think the biggest problem would be pharmaceuticals in our drinking water. It’s a serious problem.

avatar JulieS

I think one of the biggest problems these days is that nothing is produced to last anymore. Even large appliances are designed to be more expensive to fix than to replace! The fact that many consumer items are cheaper to replace than to repair is unfortunately part of the new “frugality” that forces those of us on a budget to choose between the environment and responsible home management.

avatar Kelly H

People and their greed and the I want more attitude. Also not knowing the affect that their stuff has on the environment (do they really know how “that” was made?

I would guess global warming and poisoning our land and waters. Humans are toxic to our planet and even though we have done so much damage, I do think more and more people are taking notice every day. Our children will treat the earth better and with their children some big changes will have occurred. The more we talk about and it promote the “good” products the better! What a great giveaway!

avatar Lisa

I think the biggest concern is the pollution of our water supply. All kinds of pharmaceuticals and nitrates are in our water.

avatar Jill

So many people not even making the easy effort. I have a hard time sometimes getting my husband to recycle instead of the trash when it takes 10 extra steps.

avatar Liz

I believe the biggest environmental concern is our water being polluted. Not only is it being polluted by pesticides and emissions, but also peoples’ TRASH. You can’t find a clean water source these days. Gone are the days of backpacking in the wilderness and filling your canteens in the stream.

Another concern of mine is the amount of plastic our society consumes. Plastic does not break down and is considered “disposable”. The amount of plastic that is filling our landfills is deplorable. That stuff doesn’t go away. It will just sit there for eons.

Liz´s last blog post…Sweater Flunkie

avatar Bev

There are many concerns, but I guess the one I notice the most is all those plastic shopping bags leaving the stores. Up until about a year ago, that was me, too. However, I now have a huge assortment of reusable shopping bags and, most important, I USE THEM!

avatar brandiandboys

I am amazed at how wasteful we are as Americans. So much is disposable…diapers, lighters, razors…just crazy crazy stuff. All of our food comes packaged in boxes…plastic. If you eliminated packaging, you would notice a big decrease in your own family garbage. Fast food containers as well! We throw out computers because it is cheaper to buy a new one rather than have it fixed. We are filling our landfills.

avatar Pam

Apathy is the biggest problem – it’s easier to do nothing than to make a change.
