Q&A Tuesday: Who Do You Listen To?

by Tsh on October 14, 2008

in inspiration

Today’s Q&A Tuesday comes from my dear friend Allison of Mrs. Fussypants’ Guide to Life.  She’s also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Blissfully Domestic, which means she’s my boss when I wear my Digital Bliss Editor hat.  Most impressively, she’s a mom to five (five!) boys.  She is powered by grace and coffee. She needs a housekeeper and a nap. Neither of which is likely.

Allison asks:

What are your three favorite bands or musicians?

Tsh’s thoughts:
This is hard for me to answer, since I listen to a wide variety of music for different moods and at different times (see my playlist at Last.fm to see what I mean).  But if we’re going for all-around favorites, mine would have to be U2, Coldplay, and Sufjan Stevens.  I could listen to any of them all day long and not grow tired.

Now it’s your turn.  Who do you love?

After I’m all finished with the “toddler tunes” and the many “Wheels on the Bus” renditions, I enjoy a variety of music. My iPod is loaded with upbeat “running” songs like “Life is a Highway” and a bunch of Pat Green songs.
I’m a big fan of Casting Crowns, David Crowder Band and Brit Nicole. I enjoy most types of music!

I would have to agree with you there on Coldplay. I listen to them quite often and, like you said, I can never get tired of hearing their music. Another favorite is Sigur Rós, which is an Icelandic band with very chill music. My third choice would probably be Michael Bublé, just because his voice is so smooth.

I could listen to these three all day… :)

Hmmmm….as far as hip hop goes I love Lupe Fiasco and Outkast, old school I love Al Green, Smokey Robinson, and Etta James. I also love Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill.

I also can’t help but love Amy Winehouse although she disturbs me.

Your response made me laugh! I like Amy Winehouse, too, even though she “disturbs” me, as you put it! The rawness and power in her music appeals to me, even at the same time that her obvious self-destruction is frightening. I feel bad for her, and I don’t buy her music. Love Lauryn Hill, though. Since you like Lauryn and Erykah, have you listened to Billy Miles? You’d probably like her.

I love Amy Winehouse’s “Just Friends” …never get sick of it. I just try to ignore the press on her. Sanity is not really a prereq. for talent ;-)

I don’t have a huge amount of time to figure out exactly who I’m listening to…something I’d like to change as my kids get older.

For now, I like Norah Jones, Leona Lewis, Glen Hansard (of The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (ya know the song, Falling Slowly by from Once).

It’s hard to pick, but lately I’ve been listening to…

1) Jon Foreman :: Lead singer of Switchfoot, who just put out some solo EPs. Some of his songs are very Sufjan Stevens-y.
2) Sandra McCracken :: Those of you who like acoustic folksy girl singers, you should check her out on iTunes. I’ve been a fan for several years. Go to Noisetrade.com and you can get some of her music for free!
3) Red Mountain Church :: They take old hymns and write new music. It’s beautiful. All of their CDs are now on iTunes!

Wow, everyone has such diverse musical tastes! Music is often what gets me through the hard times, and what inspires me in the good times. My favs, Patty Griffin, Ray LaMontagne, and now Brandi Carlile. Singer-songwriter folky types.

I’m not cool; I do not have varied or diverse musical tastes. I likes what I likes, and I listens to it alls the time. ;) I have a collection of about 40 songs, all by Johnny Cash and all of them Christian, and that’s pretty much all I ever listen to. In fact, since I don’t have an MP3 player in the car, there I only listen to one CD: Johnny Cash’s My Mother’s Hymn Book. If I’m really feeling it, I might listen to other songs by Johnny Cash, or even other classic country artists. (Shock! Awe!) I did not grow up listening to country, though — it was a taste I acquired as an adult — so occasionally I’ll revert to my first musical love, oldies and classic rock and roll.

(Just in case you’re feeling sorry for me and thinking that I listen to such a narrow selection because I just don’t know what’s out there or am afraid to try new things, you should know that my husband is just about the most eclectic and passionate music lover in existence, and virtually no obscure garage band ever puts out a CD that he does not acquire, regardless of genre. I hear it all, and much of it is good. I just REALLY like Johnny Cash!)

This is quite a hard question! I have to do it by categories because I listen to all types of music…

Hip Hop I would choose Kayne West, The Roots and Outcast
Country I tend to listen to the classics: Patsy Kline and Johnny Cash
R&B I’m a big Amy Winehouse fan….I know, but I love her music, and most recently Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Ne-Yo
Pop I am the biggest Janet Jackson fan you will even meet! I now love Rihanna, the group Paramore, and Chris Brown
Rock, I love love love Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and Nirvana….not really into new rock

I like too much to pick just 3. I have to say that the kids stuff by They Might Be Giants (particularly, “Here Come the 123′s” doesn’t make my ears bleed and is a family favorite, along with the Curious George Soundtrack by Jack Johnson. I’ve got my boy into Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida”, but he hasn’t gotten hooked on more than just that one song. When on my own, I love Feist, Stevie Wonder and Eric Serra soundtracks (“The Big Blue” “The Fifth Element”)…the Moulin Rouge soundtrack is also a fave.
