When it Comes to High-Tech Tools at Home, Choose Quality

This giveaway is now closed.

It’s probably no surprise to you that I’m a minimalist.  I shudder at clutter, and I much prefer having one high-quality item than several mediocre versions of something similar.  My idea of a heavenly wardrobe is 10 pieces that fit me perfectly and won’t ever wear out.

So when Epson wanted me to give their latest printer a whirl, I thought sure, it might be nice to have one gadget that does a lot of things well.  And while I’m not much of a gadget fiend, my husband is, so he was more than a little excited to try it out.  Let’s just say that it didn’t take me long to truly appreciate the gift I’d been given.

I’m impressed with the thing. It’s cool.  And because it does so much so quickly, it really does make life at home simpler and more productive.

Here’s why I love the Epson Artisan 800 printer:

1. The high-definition photo-quality is outstanding.

We’ll never have to order photos with an outside source again.  I can even edit our photos from the printer – eliminate the red-eye, restore old photos, add text, and more.  The plus side for me is that now I actually get around to developing photos, instead of just burning them straight to a disc, probably never to be seen again.  (And since we’re currently staying with my parents while we’re stateside for a few months, it’s satisfying the never-ceasing grandparent’s thirst for photos.)

Oh, and it prints photos quickly – we’re talking 10 seconds.  So if you think you might order (or still win!) your Christmas photo cards from Chickpea Designs, you can print them at home as high-definition photos.

2.  It’s wi-fi.

Yep, I never have to connect my laptop and mess with a tangle of cords.  This keeps my workspace cleaner, more organized, and more functional. And because it’s wi-fi, anyone who brings their laptop to your home can easily print without having to connect (which yes, means you should password-protect your internet connection so that your neighbors don’t start randomly printing their family photos – wouldn’t that be weird?).

3.  It’s pretty.

The LCD keypad is sleek and easy to use, and the printer is unobtrusive, so I don’t mind having it out on display.  A big deal for me.

4.  It does lots of things.

It scans, it copies, it faxes, it prints double-sided, it creates coloring book pages, it prints ruled and graph paper for school, it prints directly onto CDs and DVDs, it brings you coffee in the morning.  Okay, not the coffee, but everything else.  And I have this suspicion that it does even more than I’m aware of.  We’ll see.

5.  One of you will win one.
Seriously.

Epson and One2One Network is graciously giving one Simple Mom reader the new Artisan 800 printer. Are you as excited as I am?  I wasn’t lying when I said November is a big month of giveaways over here!

Here’s how to win:

1. Leave a comment on this post, answering this question:  What gadget can’t you live without?

2. For a second entry, email me at simplemomblog (at) gmail (dot) com with the secret code in the email’s subject line (no need to write anything in the email’s body, as it won’t be read).  To find the secret code, make sure you’ve subscribed to Simple Mom’s feed either via RSS or via email, and look in the footer of any post.  I promise you – the code is there.

3. For a third entry, mention this giveaway on your blog, and make sure I somehow find out about it.

This giveaway will end on Wednesday, November 12, midnight CST.

I hope you win!

The gadget I can’t live without is my computer!!

  12. Oh…Tsh…ever since BlissDom I have so wanted an Epson printer. Continuing to read about them in the weeks since have just created more interest (and want!). Those of you who received one have sold me on them; IF we had the extra cash, daggum it, I’d have bought one by now, but ortho and dental and kids’ athletics, and all those other “things” seem to need that money more. Go figure :) .

ANYWAYS…sorry! I digress! The gadget I can’t do without (but wish I could) is my cell phone; if I leave home without it by accident, I feel half-naked!

I’ll blog a post with a link to you…goodness knows I’m doing everything I can to at least improve my chances :) .

p.s. If I send chocolate will that help? ;)

  16. avatar Julie says:

Does my computer count as a gadget? ‘Cause it’s my favorite inanimate object. If that doesn’t count…definitely my digital camera. I finally got a digital SLR this year (after 7 years of a 2.1MP point and shoot) and it’s fabulous. :)

  42. avatar Noble W. says:

I’m torn! I use *two* gadgets the most. My cell phone and my lap top. Being the only driving child in the family (therefore the one sent on errands) is tough stuff when you don’t have a way to call home and ask Mom exactly what kind of pasta she was looking for! (Plus, I get to text my fiance 24/7. :-D ) And my lap top because being in a family of six with one main computer makes it nearly impossible to have enough time to follow the blogs I love, like yours!

  43. avatar mary faith says:

My favorite gadget is definitely my Canon Rebel XSi. It was definitely an unexpected blessing and I love taking pictures of my kiddos and the world around me.

  47. avatar Kathleen says:

My favorite gadget doesn’t qualify as hi-tech; however, I use it constantly and it has simplified my life tremendously! Ready? It is kind of old-fashioned, in a way, but here it is: my Excalibur 9 tray dehydrator! I use it almost every day. I use it to make 8 quarts of yogurt at one time, which allowed me to de-clutter away my small yogurt maker. Plus, homemade yogurt is so much healthier and less-expensive than store bought…and the yogurt never touches plastic! I am using it right now to make “sun-dried” tomatoes from our excess garden supply. I use it to make an almost raw, healthy granola = no reliance on high-cost cereals, yeah! I use it to make our own dehydrated fruit chunks-yummy and no sulfites! I use it to make soaked/sprouted nuts and seeds (great crunchy treats!). I’ve even used it to dry out extra kombucha “mushrooms” for my crafty children to use. I could go on… So, it is not high tech, yet it has simplified life for me. My dehydrator has allowed me to save money, prepare homemade yummies which are much healthier and also to be more self-reliant.

I would totally lost without my laptop. For some reason I have a deep-seated aversion to cell phones, I’ve often considered running over mine just for kicks. The fact that I never have is probably evidence that my cell is the one gadget I couldn’t live without. Just bought a new one last month (my old one was purchased in Jan 2004), it has a qwerty keyboard and a whole bunch of other cool features, so our relationship is improving…

  66. avatar Kristen says:

I couldn’t like without my cell phone.

  93. Well, one gadget that my parents and in-laws _WISH_ I couldn’t live without is my digital camera, but really I’ve done quite well without it over the past few months…but that’s not what you asked…

I only very rarely go anywhere overnight without my laptop. Even when I know I can’t access the internet where I’m going, I just feel better having it with me. Often it just stays in my bag, but that doesn’t matter. It’s like my little technological security blanket. It even keeps me warm! :)

Second to that would be my cell phone. I lived in Baghdad in 2003 and 2004 while working for a humanitarian organization and always had it with me, just in case I was ever kidnapped or something. It was years after returning to the States before I could go anywhere without it and not get almost panicky.
