Create, Order, Buy (or Win!) Your Holiday Cards in Plenty of Time

November 3, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This giveaway is now closed.

The first giveaway for November comes to you from one great company and from, well, yours truly.  And it also happens to coincide with the next project in the 12 Weeks to Prepare for Christmas series.

Now’s the best time to start working on your holiday card plans.  These days, sending digital newsletters or digital cards is the norm, but I still enjoy sending out the tried-and-true snail mail method (though yes, I detest paper clutter).  For me, it’s all part of the holiday spirit to take a family photo, address and stamp envelopes, and lovingly display the ones I receive in return.

If you plan to include a family photo in your card this year, take your first shot this week while you’ve still got plenty of time, so that you’re not rushed and have time to try again.  And if you’ve collated your address list, you should already know how many cards you need to order.  It’ll save you money to order early with some shops, including mine.

Start addressing envelopes now, just a few at a time, and you’ll be golden by early December, when you can mail all your cards in one fell swoop.  Keep your address list and envelopes in a convenient location, and write out a few at a time here and there.  It’ll be painless.

If you plan on sending out photo cards this year, then I’ve got an chance for you to win some in this giveaway.  One reader will win a customized high-resolution digital photo card file of their choice from Chickpea Designs, my graphic design shop. The file is yours to keep forever – you can make as many prints as you want, when you want. In addition, you will receive 10 5×7 prints of your photo card, free.

(And although I’m referring to holiday cards here, I’ve also got baby announcements, save-the-date cards, and birthday invites – any of those designs are eligible for this contest.)

The second addition to the giveaway is from PictureItPostageYou will win two sheets of personalized US postage stamps – simply upload your photo on their site, edit and align it, and voila – stamps with your children (or dog, or hamster, or neighbors) are headed your way.

PictureItPostage also has a hilarious contest going on right now – until November 19, upload your worst holiday photo, whether it be flat-out embarrassing or simply unflattering.  Starting December 1, people can vote for their favorite photos – and two grand prize winners will win a new Canon Digital SLR camera and five sets of stamps.  Plus, think how entertaining it will be to endlessly peruse horrible photos.  Now that’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Here’s how you can win a personalized photo card design, 10 5×7 photo card prints, and 20 personalized postage stamps:

1. For a single entry, simply comment below, and answer this question – what’s your favorite holiday?

2. For a second entry, email me at simplemomblog (at) gmail (dot) com with the secret code in the email’s subject line (no need to write anything in the email’s body, as it won’t be read).  To find the secret code, make sure you’ve subscribed to Simple Mom’s feed either via RSS or via email, and look in the footer of any post.

3. For a third entry, mention this giveaway on your blog, and make sure I somehow find out about it.

This giveaway will end on Friday, November 7, midnight CST.  I hope you win!

Christmas….its always been a special holiday for my family growing up. Its the one time of year that my husband and I get to see both sides of our families. We live over 5 hours from each of them, so its nice to get to spend time with all (different weekends though). But most importantly, I love Chirstmas because we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus. So Easter is a tie for the favorite holiday too!

Laine Chambers 11.03.08 at 5:31 am

Christmas is my favorite for sure! We love birthdays and what could be better than celebrating our Lord’s birth?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. It always has been and as I have gotten older and had a family of my own, I wanted my children to enjoy the Holiday wtih innocence and realization for the reason why we celebrate this Holiday. I also want them to remember that it’s not about what you get, it is about what you give and what you have already been given.

I added your give-away to the give-away page on my site. (I love give-aways!). http://cupcakesandcrinoline.com/?page_id=360

Southern Gal 11.03.08 at 6:33 am

Christmas! We love to celebrate the birth of the Savior with traditions we’ve made since we’ve been married…28 years worth.

I’ve sent photo Christmas cards since my oldest two were 4 and 2 years old. They are 19 and 17 now plus we have a 6-year-old. I would love to win this! It gets more and more expensive every year, but I just can’t part with the tradition.

My favorite, yet most difficult holiday is Christmas. I love everything about it. Well, except the fact that we live no where near any of our family and that is such a big part of the holiday for me that it makes me a little sad every year to be so far away. This year though, my parents are buying us plane tickets to fly home with our daughter for Christmas till new years, which will make it all that much more special.

I do like Christmas, but I am not one who decorates a lot. I like to do something “different” – and if we travel I don’t decorate at all. Last year instead of a regular Christmas tree, we had an orange tree. We’ll plant it in the yard.

It’s a family tradition that he proposes again every year, only now there’s the additional sound of the tiny hands of our son clapping in the background and the coffee has been traded in for cocoa so we can all enjoy it. Bliss!

On second thought, it’s probably the day AFTER both of those days-all the hustle and bustle is done and I can sit back and relish all the memories with no stress! ;)

For us as a family we so enjoy celebrating Passover and Hanukkah! I grew up celebrating Christmas, which was always very special, but now that my husband, children and I live in Israel we dont find ourselves celebrating it as before. Passover and Hanukkah are fun-filled feasts for the kids, and they both still hold meaning for us. We havent forgotten about the ‘true meaning’ of Christmas though! we daily remember the Lord Jesus in coming to this earth and dying for us.
Thank you so much for this site.. i have found it to be SUCH a blessing to me and my household.. particually the organizing topics. SO thanks so much!

hands down, my favorite holiday is Christmas. celebrating the Lord’s birthday, getting together with friends & family, seeing the delight in my son’s eyes as he opens special gifts, our candlelight service on Christmas Eve… i detest what stores and corporations have made of Christmas, but at the very heart of what it is, i love that holiday.

I’m Jewish and my husband was raised Catholic, so we celebrate Chrismakkah. Our favorite holiday activity is setting up our hot pink tree and decorating it with sparkly dreidl ornaments.

Mandy 11.03.08 at 12:11 pm

By and large, my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. It comes without all the pressure of Christmas and allows families to just be, and be together. It also reminds us to take time to be thankful for our blessings, and these days, it’s easy to forget to give thanks.

Christmas, definitely! Cold outside, cheery inside, warm sweaters, hot cocoa… :)

I recently figured out the secret code thing in Google – for me, I usually just click the title of the blog and it takes me to the actual page. But if you click on the expand button (looks like a plus sign) and read it through Google’s page, there’s a RSS feed code at the bottom. Don’t know if that works for all Google users (not computer literate enough, I guess) but I hope that helps!

Erin 11.03.08 at 9:02 pm

definitely a toss-up between thanksgiving and christmas (i just love the whole season from nov. 1 through jan.2) but thanksgiving is very special in our family. my mother has 5 siblings, and their mom and dad (my grandparents) passed away when my mom and her siblings were all in their teens and twenties. therefore, christmas was never a time that we saw my mom’s side of the family as everyone dispersed to their respective in-laws. so when i was young, my mom started the tradition of having all her siblings and their families to our house for thanksgiving (5 siblings x catholicism = a BIG thanksgiving crowd). this was always such a magical time of being with my cousins, making up thanksgiving plays to perform for the adults, 15 kids sleeping in one room, telling ghost stories. now, 20 years later…the tradition still stands. every thanksgiving siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, and now THEIR families, travel from around the country and congregate at my parents house in rural pennsylvania. last year the table was set for 30. our children will soon be putting on the thanskgiving plays for us. and it’s still magical.

Since becoming a parent, I can’t decide which I love more-the celebration of thanksgiving or Christmas. In a pinch, I would absolutely choose Christmas, as it is the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanksgiving holds such a special meaning for us as we are concentrating on teaching our almost 3 year old daughter about gratitude and having a thankful heart.

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving (though like your first commenter, Christmas is rapidly catching up with it as we make conscious decisions about how to celebrate).

But Thanksgiving is non-denominational, all inclusive, is a foodie’s Superbowl, brings home far-flung relatives, brings together friends and family, takes place during my favorite time of year, involves a lot of excitement around football…and involves no gifts!

I’m a new reader here, and I didn’t realize that you did holiday cards and other products. I love them!

I actually have 2 favorite holidays! I love Christmas and I also love Halloween! I love the hustle and bustle and decorations and sights and and sounds and smells of both! I love picking out and giving gifts! I love looking at Christmas lights and the smell of a live Christmas tree, even though I no longer get a live one. I love creating costumes for Halloween and most always made my sons costumes as he was growing up. And I still love dressing up in a costume myself, if I can. I love decorating my house for both holidays and each year I add something new to my decorations, even though I have way more then enough decorations. And most of all, I love being able to celebrate these holidays with my family and friends!

jmay 11.04.08 at 9:51 am

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. There is no music, no gifts, and few decorations. It is centered around family, food, and thankfulness. It is a necessity to me to celebrate Thanksgiving and recall the countless blessings of the year, before preparing for the birth of Christ through the season of Advent, and celebrating Christmas starting on December 25 and lasting for 12 days!

I sure do love the Christmas spirit! I love to be out and about with all the holiday music, great shopping deals, and finding that perfect gift.

And..I also love Valentine’s Day. It’s a great day to spend loving everyone else. Bonus if you feel the love back!

I love all holidays-a day off work. But my favorite is Halloween. I love that time of the year with the rustling leaves and the bonfires. And I love to dress up my little goblins. My oldest daughter is 14 and still dresses up every year. Are we crazy or what?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love the sights, smells, and sounds of the holiday. I LOVE spending time with my family. I love to see the smiles on the faces of my children when they get to open their presents. It’s a beautiful time of year with all of the lights and the sparkle of the ornaments and gift wrap. It is just a wonderful time of year.

My favorite holiday is Christmas because it helps us to focus, as a nation, on the real reason for the season. Plus, it also helps that it is my birthday as well!

Melody 11.04.08 at 12:22 pm

My favorite holiday has always been Christmas! If I could call the entire winter season my favorite holiday, I would. But to just pick one, Christmas would have to be it. I love the atmosphere, the music, the lights, decorating the tree, Christmas candles, being cozy, hot chocolate, Christmas parties, giving gifts, getting up early on Christmas day, still being anxious about opening my stocking.. The list could go on and on..

Christmas is by far my favorite. Growing up my family never really did much celebrating so I like to go all out. Well, as all out as our budget will allow. I love it all … the decorations, the cooking, the baking, the shopping, the presents (giving and receiving). There isn’t much I don’t love – maybe just the clean up.

Jenn in AZ 11.04.08 at 2:54 pm

CHRISTMAS!!! Hands-down choice! I love the season–not as nippy in AZ as I would like, but better than August!, the music, the lights, the get-togethers, the family-time, cutting down the tree, the giving, the attitudes, and most of all…the whole reason for our celebration…the CHRIST in Christmas. :)

Thanks!

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Its become a family tradition in my house for my children to help prepare the meal. My girls love baking pumpkin pies and my husband always works magic with the turkey.

April Zderad 11.04.08 at 3:28 pm

I really love Christmas. I don’t get into the presents that much, but I love all the traditions like Christmas Eve service at church, making cookies to give away and the ornament exchange I host every year for my friends.

Stacy 11.04.08 at 3:29 pm

My favorite holiday is by far Christmas Eve night and Christmas Day. Why? Because of the wonderful tradition we started after my youngest was born.

It always seemed Christmas Day was a “run here, run there” kind of day to see family members. The Christmas after my daughter was born I said, “Enough!”. And so our new tradition began.

Christmas Eve night each family members opens 3 special gifts. A new book to enjoy (had for little ones to appreciate a good book with so many toys to choose from on Christmas), comfy new pajamas and an ornament to hang on the tree to signify a favorite moment or hobby started that year. Then it’s off to midnight service at our church.

On Christmas morning, we get up and get “dressed” in our new pajamas and hang out all day listening to Christmas music, watching Christmas movies or playing board games. Our usual meal is a buffet-style of everyones favorite hors d’oeuvres along with a big kettle of my hot ‘n spicy chicken soup.

All the family is invited to stop by for a casual affair, but normally we’ve celebrated with them sometime before Christmas day.

I wouldn’t trade this tradition for anything because I know during all the hustle and bustle of November and December my immediate family and I are going to have a relaxing Christmas Eve and Christmas Day together. I mean, who can’t be relaxed in a new pair of pajamas eating their favorite snack? :)

Gwen in SoCal 11.04.08 at 3:37 pm

I would have to say Christmas (although I’m a celebrate-as-many-holidays-as-possible kind of mom) for multiple reasons:
-it’s a great way to celebrate Jesus in a tangible way with our kids
-it lasts longer than one day or one meal
-I love watching my kids enjoy it
-love the food and music associated with it

Theo 11.05.08 at 8:49 pm

My favorite holiday would have to Christmas. It’s such a nostalgic and beautiful time of the year…everything about it–church, food, songs–vibrates with life and color!

Leslie 11.05.08 at 8:51 pm

Definitely Christmas. Our church has a huge outdoor living Nativity that is free for the community and has blessed our family every year as we remember what God has done for us through sending his son Jesus in the most miraculous way!

Jen B. 11.06.08 at 10:37 am

Thanksgiving. I love that the weather is still autumnal and the family is all together. There is NO focus on gifts, just on gratitude and love (and food!).

Katie 11.06.08 at 10:39 am

It’s a toss up between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love the time of the year, and it’s the two holidays that we see the most family!

Angie 11.06.08 at 10:42 am

My favorite holiday is Christmas because now my kids are old enough to really start getting into it and enjoy the true meaning. It’s so awesome!

I love Christmas. It is for the love of the family getting together and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. That is the meaning of Christmas. It is not for the gifts or the food. It is only for one person. His name is Jesus. God Bless you.

Renee 11.06.08 at 11:50 am

Thanksgiving. Good food, family and the excitement of Christmas ahead…

Jenny 11.06.08 at 11:50 am

My favorite holiday by far is Christmas! I love all the preparation and shopping and most of all the birthday party we have for Jesus.

Paula 11.06.08 at 11:59 am

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. I think it stems from when I was “nesting” with baby #1 around that time and I loved finding recipes and planning the party. This year it will be my sons first holiday and I’m so looking forward to being able to chow down and not be pregnant anymore!

I love halloween!

Jennifer B 11.06.08 at 12:09 pm

My favorite holiday was always July 4th. But it turns out that my daughter was born on July 4th, and her “special day” has kind of taken over what I’ve always loved doing on the 4th. Yes, we go see fireworks and sometimes a parade, but she has specific ideas about her favorite foods for her birthday, and barbeque ribs or burgers (my first choice) or a crab/lobster bake (my second choice) isn’t it. So we now get to eat pizza on the 4th, and I get to look for a new favorite holiday!

Sara 11.06.08 at 12:24 pm

Christmas is definitely my favorite. Snow, hot cocoa, lights, presents, music. The music!!! The cards, the getting back in touch with family & friends!

Halloween is my favorite. For one day of the year you can be whoever/whatever you want.

Jessica 11.06.08 at 12:45 pm

I’ve always loved Christmas most. When I was younger it was, of course, for the presents. And also because all 6 of us kids would sleep together, mostly trying to catch Santa. Now I love Christmas even more because of those special memories and I love seeing the joyful faces of my kids.

Jennifer K 11.06.08 at 1:03 pm

Now that I have kids, Christmas is my favorite holiday! I love to watch their faces and it is great to get all of the family together (which doesn’t happen as much on the other holidays).

Maria 11.06.08 at 1:23 pm

Love, Love, Love Christmas!

Thanksgiving is my favorite. A long weekend with the holiday at the beginning so, once the meal is served, I can relax and enjoy a clean house and leftovers for four days… of course there is the craziness leading up to the meal but I seem to be getting better at that planning thing. =)

Wow, my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. My 10th great grandfather, John Alden was aboard the Mayflower and the true name has been passed down all these generations and now ends at my father (he had girls) . Although I did take the Alden name as my middle name when I got married. Our family has such a rich history though Thanksgiving that our Thanksgivingings are special every year. We even started a Thanksgiving thankful book, where everyone says what they are thankful for in a journal…. it’s fun to look back and see the entries from years past.

Definitely Christmas. Can’t beat the smell of the Christmas tree while singing Christmas carols and opening gifts! Plus I get to see family on both my mom and dad’s side with family cookie bakes and our Christmas eve celebration.

Michelle G. 11.06.08 at 8:48 pm

Halloween is my favorite holiday becaues it’s the most fun with the least pressure. I love the silly crafts with the kids and changing their look with each Fall Festival we attend. We pack in the fun, but it never feels pressured like the fancier holidays. Obviously, this has nothing to do with which holiday means the most to me. That would be Easter!

Erin 11.06.08 at 8:57 pm

Definitely Christmas – I love the anticipation it brings with it, the family it draws together, and the way it causes me to ponder the miracle of Christ coming to this earth.

Elaine 11.06.08 at 9:29 pm

I do love Christmas, but the QUIET moments of the holiday that we have fostered as a family–hot chocolate in the glow of Christmas tree lights being my absolute favorite!

Lucy K 11.06.08 at 10:37 pm

My favorite Holiday is Christmas. Now that I have kids I see the spirit of the holiday thru their eyes. Especially x-mas morning when Santa been to the house and ate their cookies and milk they leave for him.

My favorite holiday is Christmas, because I get to spend time with my family and I love to see my child’s face light up so early in the morning waking me up to open his presents.

heather 11.07.08 at 1:57 am

Christmas…when we aren’t in the US, honestly. I enjoy the fact that it kind of sneaks up on you. There’s not a lot of hype or crowds at the mall. It’s fun to celebrate Jesus’ birth and enjoy the kids without being exhausted from 6 weeks of parties and activities before the holiday. Sometimes we even make our cookies on Dec. 25!

Xenia 11.07.08 at 7:40 am

Hmmm, I think my favorite holiday has to be the 4th of July. I love the warm weather, the family cook-outs, and the annual parade that we always go to see. Thanks for the great giveaway!
