Home trends I’m (still) not over

Home trends will always come and go, but there is nothing more disappointing than investing in a decor item that magazines and design blogs suddenly declare to be “outdated.”

While I usually choose a classic style for my nicest pieces, I fall for bold trends pretty often.  My home has all of these things and I have no regrets:

Wallpaper

It’s out, it’s in, it’s embarrassing, it’s hip.  I’ve never really gotten over this shimmery green floral wallpaper my mom had in the dining room in the early 90’s.  For awhile, graphic wallpaper was acceptable only in fancy hotels or garish restaurants.  But it’s been back with a vengeance for several years now and you can bet I jumped on that bandwagon.  I have graphic wallpaper in my powder room and in my home office.

5 Must know tips on thrifting

Written by Arianne Segerman, Editor of Simple Design

Hi there Simple Mom readers! We’ve been having lots of fun over at Simple Design, have you visited us yet? Lately we’ve had a whole series on strategies for designing your life, fab summer music recommendations by our resident music guru, tips on how to find your personal style and a beauty roundup of awesome braid tutorials, just to name a few. It’s been quite the summer!

One of my favorite things we do at Simple Design is a weekly link-up of what I call a Thrift Haul. It’s a day for everyone to link up whatever thrifty/re-sale/second-hand/yard sale finds they’ve scored recently. It’s fun, it’s inspiring and it helps me with my goal to encourage everyone to visit thrift stores more often.

Maybe you’re already passionate about thrifting, or maybe you still need to be convinced, but either way I’d love to share some of the street smarts I’ve learned over the years in the art of thrifting.

5 Must know tips on thrifting

1. Have a list and go often

This might seem like no biggy, but if you walk into a thrift shop with no plan at all, you’re much more likely to go home with too much, most of which you probably shouldn’t have purchased. I have my “always look for” list and then my list of specific items I’m on the hunt for. My “always look for” items are cross-stitched decor, pyrex, floral vintage fabric/bedding and vintage tablecloths. I will pretty much always grab these if I find some pretty, good quality and well-priced things. I also look for certain prints/patterns like stripes and southwest/geometric in linens.

Anything else, be it baby clothes, kitchen items, shoes, bags, etc. I only look at if I’m specifically there to look for those items. In addition, you need to go often so you can spot the new things and not have to always dig through what no one is buying. All of this helps you not be too overwhelmed with all the STUFF. Which brings me to the next point…

On fashioning a beautiful home

Written by contributor Maggie Whitley of Gussy Sews.

Sometimes I’m too quick to want a beautiful home but not quick enough to want to create that beautiful home. And I know that may sound silly and yes, it’s not true all the time. And maybe it’s even a bit lame to admit that, but when you work from home and spend a lot of that time online, dreaming new product designs or researching fabric or connecting with customers, it’s easy to feel creatively zapped once six o’clock hits.

Does that surprise you?

Gosh, I hope not. I know it can’t be that hard to create a beautiful home. Many of my friends share simple + easy tips on creating an imperfect, beautiful home.

Finally one day I sat myself down and had a serious talk. With myself. Yes, myself.

I told myself, “Maggie, don’t make this harder than it needs to be. You only need a few things to create a beautiful mantle that loves you, too. Now go on, get started!”

And so I did. I gathered inspiration from my friend Lisa’s mantle + added in some of my own pretties that make me feel happy. I wanted our home to be relaxing once six o’clock came, but still inspiring enough that I felt encouraged to dream + play during non-work hours.

A friend mailed me a darling string of paper garland she made + I knew that would be the finishing touch to our living room’s decor. To creating that beautiful home.

Sometimes decorating our living room feels super hard because of the dark, original wood details or the old {that doesn’t work anymore} fireplace, but since we rent I know these are things I need to work around.

Fashioning our home in a style that makes me proud is a home decorating challenge I find myself in often. I think because I spend so much time with fabric + zippers I forget how much fun it is to work in a new medium, like books + candlesticks. Do you have any decorating challenges in your home that you’ve been able to creatively work through?

Here are three quick tips to decorating your home:

Quick and Easy Holiday Decorating Ideas

Written by home columnist Emily Walker of Remodeling This Life.

This time of year can get overwhelming fast. Before the turkey has even settled in our stomachs, it’s time to plan putting up the Christmas tree or getting ready to race into stores for Black Friday sales. I personally end up feeling like the entire reason for the season gets lost in the chaos of sales and decorations.

I love to put up simple decorations that honor the season and provide a daily reminder of what the true magic is this time of year, rather than ones that attempt to take center stage.

Here are some ideas for keeping it simple with some quick and easy holiday decorations.
