Today’s weekend giveaway is for you iPad users! Treed is an iPad app designed for making progress on your goals. The premise is simple: envision your goal, think about how you can get there, and create a map of these tasks. They call this goal mapping.

It’s a combination of backwards planning and a tree diagram (hence the app name of Treed). Treed keeps track of your progress and dynamically updates a list of the actionable items based on your evolving map. Treed helps you keep the bigger picture in sight, while also helping you focus on what you can do now. It’s great for all kinds of projects and goals for work, home, school, or life.

The original seed for this app came from Cara Oba’s dissatisfaction with planning design projects. She was using various systems to track progress on her details, and found herself constantly rewriting lists. Creating something for the iPad was a no-brainer, since it made editing plans ridiculously simple and she could stay focused.

As stay-at-home/work-at-home parents gifted in design and programming, Treed is Kyle and Cara’s first product from their new business, Pas de Chocolat. It’s a different kind of tool that encourages thoughtful goal setting and planning.

Note from Tsh: Today’s guest post comes from my friend Crystal of Money Saving Mom. She and I have known each other since our “early days” of blogging, and it’s a treat to work and walk alongside someone else who thinks “weird” like me. I love her words here!

People are often quite surprised to find out I’ve never had a credit card. In fact, sometimes, they have to ask three times just to be sure they heard me correctly:

“So you’ve never had a credit card?” they ask incredulously.

“Nope,” I respond.

“Like ever?”

“Right, never,” I reiterate.

“Not even when you were younger—ten years ago or something?” They continue to quiz.

“No, really and truly, I’ve never had a credit card,” I reply, again.

Usually people just end up looking at me aghast like I’m from some other planet or something. That’s okay, I’ve gotten used to the fact that I’m weird.

But you know what I’ve also never had? Credit card debt.

Yes, it’s true. There’s a brilliant and guaranteed way to avoid credit card debt: just don’t get a credit card in the first place. It works—every single time!

I’ve never had to worry about how I’m going to pay off the credit card bill that’s coming due. I’ve never had to hassle with being harassed by credit card companies because my payment was late. And I’ve never had to dread opening up a credit card bill to see how large it was.

We have a policy at our house: if we can’t pay cash for it, we don’t buy it. It’s a plain and simple policy, but it’s saved us a boatload of debt, fights over money, and stress about our finances.

Sure, it has meant we’ve gone without a lot of different things we wanted over the years because we didn’t have money to pay for it. But truthfully, I’ll take the peace and freedom that comes from living without credit card debt over all the bling and stuff. It’s worth more than money can buy, anyway.

Do I think credit cards are evil? Well, I wouldn’t go so far to say they are wrong or immoral, but I would say that I’d strongly encourage anyone who is currently swiping plastic on a regular basis to step back and consider a few things:

1. Using cash keeps you from over-spending.

Yes, cash can burn a hole in your pocket and you can blow it. But here’s the thing: if you only use cash, when the money’s gone, it’s gone.

You either learn to pace yourself and your spending so that you have enough money to buy groceries at the end of the month, or you go without buying groceries. I promise that if you don’t have any grocery money to spend the last week of the month, you’ll probably think a lot more carefully the next month when you’re tempted to spend all your grocery cash during the first few weeks of the month.

2. Using cash forces you to evaluate your purchases.

When you use cash, you can’t mindlessly swipe a card—you have to pull green bills out and hand them over. It doesn’t take a month for the purchase to show up on your credit card bill; the pain of purchase is immediate.

This direct correlation can give you a much better grasp on your finances and on where your money is going. And it will probably also cause you to step back and carefully evaluate each purchase.

3. Using cash prevents you from betting on the future.

So many people say, “I treat my credit card like cash and always pay off my credit card bill in full at the end of each month.” That sounds great—in theory. But very few people are truly treating their credit card like cash.

Unless, before you make a purchase, you set aside the full amount of money to cover the purchase in a separate account and never touch that money until you pay your credit card bill, you are not truly treating your credit cards like cash. If you don’t have the money set aside for the full credit card bill, what happens if you lose your job tomorrow or you have a major financial crisis that puts you in a big bind?

By using the bank’s money or store credit to pay for your purchases, you are presuming that you are going to have enough money to pay the bill when it comes. And if you don’t, you could end up getting hit with high interest payments on top of the money you owe.

4. Using cash guarantees you never have to pay anyone back.

When you pay with cash, you can’t buy something unless you have enough money to pay for it. This often means you have to work hard, scrimp, and save up to make a purchase. This process of scrimping and saving can be grueling, but the satisfaction of exercising self-discipline and waiting to buy something with your own hard-earned money is every bit worth it in the long run.

And you know the best part about paying with cash? You never have to worry about paying anyone back. When you buy something, it’s yours—free and clear!

Needless to say, I was more than happy to test out my new mixer for this post. I started with Aimée’s shortbread recipe.

Perfection.

As mentioned in the included user guide, this KitchenAid mixer mixes faster and more thoroughly than standard mixers, so the mixing time in most recipes will need to be adjusted to avoid overbeating. It says that cakes will probably take half as long. Goodness.

It’s also their quietest model to date.

Included are the 11-wire Elliptical Whip, coated metal Flat Beater, Power Knead Dough Hook, and a Pouring Shield. The polished stainless steel bowl is also equipped with a sturdy handle, as it should—the thing can hold 8.5 pounds of mashed potatoes, 8.5 loaves of bread, or 14 dozen cookies.

I whipped up four dozen cookies in this bowl. Look how much room there is. And yes, that’s Finn’s hand—he was “helping.”

So our marble run review took place at night, after the kids were in bed. We can’t spoil the surprise.

Needless to say, Kyle was happy to help with the review.

We both had a ball playing with this thing. It’s sturdy, easy to assemble, and limitless. It inherently fosters open-ended, creative play—my favorite kind of play.

Now, I wasn’t sure about the quality before it arrived in the mail, because I prefer wooden toys. But this marble run really is quality-made and sturdy. It’ll last us a long time, and our kids play with toys hard. Plus, I like that the sound effects are optional (I have a serious aversion to sound-making toys)—simply don’t include the batteries.

I’m also psyched to have a set of Connectagons in the house! My niece and nephew have a set of these, and my kids love playing with them when we visit. They also foster open-ended play because you can build anything with them—the only limit is creativity. Knowing Tate, she’ll probably be building a house or farm on Christmas morning.

I adore Hearthsong (really!) because they’re adamant about providing children with age-appropriate, wholesome, quality playthings. They care about kids being kids. You won’t find any icky toys here, and I love supporting a business that provides quality, family-friendly products at decent prices. Win! I just love it when blogger friends launch books—it’s thrilling to walk with them through the book-writing process and watch their ideas morph to actual pages bound with glue.

Today I’m happy to announce the release of my friend Marie LeBaron‘s new book, Make and Takes for Kids: 50 Crafts Throughout the Year. And she wants to give two Simple Mom readers a copy!

What I love most about Marie’s craft ideas: they’re simple. I admire with astonishment the craft projects that obviously take time and talent—especially when they’re done with kids. But I’m a busy mom, so I just don’t have the time to create intricate activities for my clan.

But my kids still love to create. And I want to encourage them to create. So that’s what makes Marie’s blog and book so great: they’re full of crafts that require normal craft and household supplies, and they don’t require a degree in Marthaology.

They’re simple and fun.

And Marie’s new book is just like her blog—full of craft ideas for everyday families. In fact, all the crafts are organized month by month, coinciding with the seasons. You can make them any time of year, of course, but I appreciate the inspiration for celebrating different holidays.
