3 favorite scarf styles

Written by contributor Lauren Lowe of The Burlap Bag

Josiah and I live in Texas. Currently as I type this, it’s 81 degrees outside. But tonight it’s going down to the low 40′s. So we have to be prepared for all types of weather – because Texas has polar opposites within 24 hours! I shall share some ideas of different types of scarves and how to wear them….

Vintage scarves

Vintage scarves are super awesome because they work in the spring and fall! They aren’t too warm but can still keep you warm – and fashionable. They are perfect to tie around your neck – especially in Texas “winter”. Plus you can snag these guys for $1 each at estate sales.

A lot of vintage scarves are smaller than knitted ones – making them perfect for putting in your hair! I’m actually wearing one in my hair in the photo above – but due to the terrible photo (thanks Josiah), you cannot see it very well.

Regular scarves

By “regular scarves” I mean ones that have 2 ends and are 3 feet to infinity feet long. Grab these on sale at the end of the cold season. Or crochet/knit your own! We found this graphic on pinterest and it’s seriously an amazing compilation of ways to tie a scarf.

Now if only it would get cold in Texas and I could wear one without sweating to death…. like I was in that first photo above with my Twinkie Chan cupcake scarf (and that was way before I saw this awesome graphic full of scarf-wearing ideas – hence the boring “over the shoulder” scarf wear-age). Fingers crossed that tonight I get to make a fire… because #10 looks SO awesome!

Infinity scarves

And a personal favorite: the infinity scarf. Super easy to make yourself by getting a long strip of fabric and sewing the ends together. These can also be worn a bajillion ways – from one long loop, to several loops, to loosely around your shoulders. The one below is the softest thing since sliced bread. Wait what? Yeah, they are so soft, just take my word for it. We have them in our shop and every girl who touches one has to buy it.

Let’s use twinkling lights all winter long

Written by contributor Lauren Lowe of The Burlap Bag

Editor’s note: I’m always a little sad when its time to put the twinkling lights from Christmas back into storage. But what if we didn’t have to? We first ran this post last November, but today I’m using it for inspiration and plan to keep some of the lights around to brighten up winter a bit longer.

Fun and unique ideas for holiday lights

Doily lights

Ahhh, aren’t these amazing??! It looks like they just had regular ole lights and then stuck paper doilies right onto the lights. (make sure the lights don’t get too hot/aren’t touching the lights… I don’t know if Christmas lights are a fire hazard or anything, but you’ve been warned!)  We might have to make these for our shop… I love them and it would only take 2 minutes! (source here)

Hi again! It’s Thursday – so Josiah and I will be sharing another cheap and easy project.

This one costs us NOTHING! (well, unless you count a pencil that’s probably from 8th grade and costs 4 cents!) And I love fun quirky earrings that make you stand out. Plus with school just starting… what’s more perfect than pencils??

So here it is!

Fun jewelry from dollhouse miniatures

Written by contributor Lauren Lowe of The Burlap Bag

Josiah and I are back for our latest Thursday series – cheap and easy (and fun!) design projects! And this week’s is more for the ladies. Or kids. Or ladies with kids. Or males that like rings. Or whoever. Whomever?

I started making fun jewelry back in 9th grade when my best friend and I discovered that anything with a loop can be put onto earrings. And we went kinda nutso with earrings. Then in college, I realized that you can glue… ANYTHING onto a ring blank! Rings not your thing? Brooches and pins work the same way! Amazing.

One of my favorite places to scour is the dollhouse miniature section of any craft store. They have cool mini food, books, frying pans, clocks, chess sets, and basically anything else you can imagine. And a lot of them are PERFECT sizes for going on rings!

Here’s a few of my favorites that I’ve made – you can find these mini pieces at craft stores and online.

An awesome huge mirror! How gaudy but also art nouveau and fun. A mirror ring is perfect for checking out your teeth for broccoli chunks or applying makeup. Ha! (but seriously, when I wear this bad boy, I definitely check my teeth with it after I eat!)

A paint palette ring/broach… perfect for that artist in your life!

And lastly, my favorite: the teacup ring. This was actually the first ring that I ever made… and still the ring that I wear most frequently! It always gets looks and compliments… and was so easy to make! The teacup and saucer and spoon already came attached. I just had to glue the whole thing to a ring blank and I was set. And I’ve seriously been wearing the same ring for 4 years now – that’s some strong glue!
