Written by work-at-home contributor Heather Allard of The Mogul Mom.
A few months ago, I wrote about the nine essential steps for building a home business that works and touched on how to choose a business based on your work experience, talents, personality, children and passions.
You see, after starting three successful home businesses over the past decade, I know firsthand that working from home is a dream that’s well within reach. But I also know that sometimes, even though you really want to work from home, it can be difficult to envision the home business that’s perfect for you.
Tsh has been sharing how blogging is in her element, and is even tinkering with the idea of teaching a blogging 101 webinar for you to learn the basics of that craft. But what if blogging’s not your thing?
I thought I’d share five home business ideas along with real world examples of moms who are successfully running this kind of business. I hope these ideas get your mom entrepreneurial juices flowing.
1. Copywriter
Do you have a way with words? Then an at-home copywriting business might be just the gig for you.
Copywriters are wordsmiths for hire and write for individuals and companies to craft the copy, or words, that you see on things like websites, sales brochures, press releases, advertisements, TV commercials, book proposals, marketing materials, newspaper articles, blog posts and more. Copywriting is work that can be done from home, your garage, the beach or even Timbuktu. Start-up is quick and easy, and about the only things you need are a computer or even just a notebook and pencil.
If your writing is persuasive, creative, convincing and compelling, hang out your copywriting shingle and put those words to work for you.
Real World Example:
James Chartrand, a mom entrepreneur with a male pen name, has built a virtual empire at Men With Pens. James is a crack-copywriter who leads the Men with Pens team of graphic artists, web designers and web developers.
2. Virtual Assistant

Are you a multi-tasking gal Friday? Sounds like you’re a VA, or virtual assistant, in the making.
Virtual assistants work for big companies, small businesses and solo entrepreneurs providing administrative, technical and social support.
Some common tasks that VAs complete are customer service, internet research, data entry, website maintenance, social media outreach and more. You can provide an endless array of services depending on your background, training, skills and experience.
Like copywriting, virtual assistance can be done from home or anywhere you might be in the world, as long as you have a wi-fi connection.
If you like helping others whittle down their to-do list while getting paid to do it, consider launching a virtual assistant business.
Real World Example:
Dawn Martinello is the multi-tasking mama behind Monday Morning VA. Dawn offers incredible virtual assistance for business owners as well as training for new VAs, all from the comfort of her home.
3. Graphic Designer
A picture is worth a thousand words. And sometimes, a thousand dollars if you’re a graphic designer.
A graphic designer communicates ideas visually though images, logos, charts and graphs by using fonts, colors and icons to create a memorable visual identity for a product, service or individual. Think Nike, Google or Seth Godin.
Like copywriters, graphic designers can work for individuals and big companies to whip up eye-catching creatives for sales brochures, websites, packaging, trade show displays, business cards, advertisements and more.
But while graphic designers can work from home using just a computer and a desktop publishing program, the really good ones (read: successful and profitable) have some formal training and industry software like Photoshop or Illustrator.
If you can help entrepreneurs and companies nail their marketing message by creating amazing graphics, then an at-home career as a graphic designer is in your future.
Real World Example:
Mother of two and graphics-guru Shannon Whealy is the founder of Turnaround Design, a graphic design company that specializes in creating powerful brand identities for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
4. Bookkeeper

Hey, someone has to count the beans. If you have a knack for keeping records of income, expenses and all things financial, it may as well be you as a bookkeeper for hire.
Bookkeepers help a company manage cash flow, keep track of profits and losses, and make spending plans based on current and past financial performance. Bookkeepers can keep record by simply writing income and expenses in a ledger, using a spreadsheet like Excel or by inputting information using more sophisticated accounting software.
If you enjoy and excel at (no pun intended) number-crunching, a bookkeeping business may be cool beans for you.
Real World Example:
Mom entrepreneur Bari Tessler took her successful bookkeeping business to a new level when she created a dynamic self-study program called Conscious Bookkeeping that offers what she calls “financial therapy”, values-based bookkeeping and life-visioning.
5. Store Owner
Do you enjoy playing personal shopper or selling friends and family on your favorite new products? Then open your mind to the possibility of opening your own online store.
Creating an online store gives you a chance to sell the latest and greatest without the expenses and overhead of a brick-and-mortar store. The best part? It takes just a handful of steps to get your store up and running fast:
- Choose what kind of products you’ll sell and where you’ll purchase them from at wholesale.
- Pick a business name, register it with your state and obtain any licenses or permits you might need.
- Open a Paypal account to accept credit card, debit card and check payments from customers.
- Create a website or open a shop on eBay or etsy.
- Establish your store policies.
- Promote your store on free social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, and submit your website to search engines like Google and Bing.
If you love selling products that customers love to buy, try on online store ownership for size.
Real World Example:
Mother of five and e-commerce entrepreneur, Heather Ledeboer runs the uber-successful Mom4Life.com from her home in Idaho. Heather and I share a fun history – Heather’s store was one of the first to carry my baby products and a few years ago, I wrote her tagline, “Motherhood’s a journey. Gear up.”
Open for Business
I hope these five business ideas have helped you move a little closer to your dream of starting a home business. If you’re still searching, come on over to The Mogul Mom and browse one hundred more home business ideas.
So, what kind of home business is in your future?

Thanks for including me in your post Heather!
Another nice thing about most of these businesses is that there is {or can be} a minimal start up cost which means it can be a lucrative adventure for a mom to start!
When I started my business 3 years ago, I quite literally had about $22.00 in my chequing account.
You’re welcome, Dawn.
And that’s a great point about the minimal start up cost of a home business. When I started my copywriting business, I read Peter Bowerman’s book The Well-Fed Writer and followed it like a prescription. My start up costs were super low, maybe $50.
Thanks for sharing!
Heather
That is so true Dawn, I started with a $100 wholesale order and an Ebay store, so my start up costs were also very low.
Great list! I looked into being a VA. I am not sure what stopped me?
Maybe this post is a sign that it’s time to take action.
Good luck!
Heather
How can one break into doing these jobs? I’ve long thought about the VA or bookkeeping thing but not sure how to get started. Any ideas?!
Hey Samantha!
You may want to get in touch with Dawn from Monday Morning VA – she’s a wonderful resource and actually offers a program for wannabe VAs at http://www.mondaymorningva.com/answers/finishing-school/.
Good luck!
Heather
Thank you so much for this useful (and encouraging!) post.
I’ve looked into both copywriting and virtual assisting… but, my struggle stubbornly persists in finding ways to get started/connected. How do you know what businesses use virtual assistants or copywriters? (Most of the companies I’ve approached either don’t use “freelancers” or have so many layers to hiring or red tape that they don’t/can’t bother.)
Any tips? (Echoing Samantha.)

Hi Caroline! Often getting started in a virtual world can be daunting but persistence is definitely the key. There’s not any real way of knowing if a business uses virtual assistants. When I started my business 3 years ago, I built it entirely upon Twitter. I used the search function to find people who were actually looking for VA’s and for those who were struggling with their business. Once I had a few clients under my belt, things took off because of word of mouth referrals.
If you stop by my site, be sure to sign up to the newsletter – there’s going to be a lot happening over the summer that will be a huge benefit to Virtual Assistants in the making!

Hey Caroline,
For copywriting, I strongly suggest Peter Bowerman’s book, The Well-Fed Writers and for virtual assisting, check out Dawn Martinello’s site (listed above as an example).
One of the biggest selling points of BOTH of these work at home gigs is that you can market yourself to both small businesses and large companies as a way for them to save money – in this economy, most companies (especially small ones!) can’t afford to keep copywriters/assistants on staff full time, so having the opportunity to hire a FREELANCE (you work on a contract or hourly basis, not as an employee of the company) copywriter or assistant is a huge win-win for them – the work gets done without them having to hire on a full time person and pay benefits, etc.
Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, Heather! (And I apologize for the multiple comments! I thought my computer was bugging!)

Heather, I’ve been copywriting for 7+ years and it’s the perfect work at home job. If you hone your skills and marketing knowledge, it can pay very well. And there is a HUGE demand for it.
While it doesn’t take much to start up equipment-wise, I highly recommend investing in some training and courses. I’ve listed some of the ones I’ve used to get my business going right here:
http://www.healthymarketingideas.com/Copywriting-Course-Resource.html
Good luck!
Awesome, Sarah! Thanks for sharing!!
Heather
I am very interested in the option of copywriting, and I do have a talent for writing- However, how does one begin such an endeavor? I can’t very well just list an ad on Craigslist advertising my writing skills, can I? Where and how do you start?
Hey Jessie,
My first home business was as a copywriter and I loved Peter Bowerman’s book, The Well-Fed Writer. It’s FULL of resources and step-by-step how to’s. You can check it out at http://wellfedwriter.com/.
Hope this helps!
Heather
Cool post! I could see myself someday having a home business — not right now, but someday. I don’t think I will ever be a work-outside-the-home kinda gal.
Great post. I could do the bookkeeping gig but I’m not sure I’d be happy with it. I’m currently and accountant and not happy….I could see myself doing something closer to a copywriter or virtual assistant. Thank you for providing contacts! The toughest part is breaking into the field and getting the word out that you’re available. How do you go about advertising yourself?
woops guess I’m off to a rocky start! my website is mysunshineaz.blogspot.com
Hey Melissa,
Great question – there are many low or no cost ways for you to “advertise” yourself, like a Facebook page, a blog or via Twitter. You can also list your business in local searches like Twellow or Google Local Search.
Hope this helps!
Heather
Heather, I am so honored to have been included among your “real world” examples and I LOVE what you do to help other moms find ways to “get their business on”, keep up the great work!
My pleasure, Heather.
I love helping moms “get their business on”. Hmmm…that would make a great tagline.
xo,
Heather
I know, I kind of thought that as I was typing it! Hey how fun would that be if we each had written each other’s tag lines;)!
SO FUN!
Some more ideas: online tutoring is great way to work from home if your pre-kids background was in formal education.
I’d also like to put in a good word for computer programming. Obviously, this is not an easy field to get into. You’d need a degree in computer science or something along those lines. But most of the programmers I know work from home and make way, way more than the average person.
So if you know a young woman who’s trying to pick a major in college and knows that she wants to eventually stay home with her kids, encourage her to consider it.

Hey Jenna,
I suppose so.
I was trying to give specific examples of home businesses for moms who would love to work from home but are having a hard time imagining the kind of business to start.

Great post! I would like to add medical transcription to your list. I have been doing transcription from my home for about 13 years. Though I did take a medical terminology course it is not usually required. Just being an accurate and quick typist can get your foot in the door. I am currently looking for something else to supplement my income from transcription, so I loved your post. I think I’ll look into the copywriting thing. Thanks so much!
Great idea, Diana! I’m going to add it to my list.
Thank you!
Heather
To become a medical transcriptionist, did you just go from Dr.’s office to Dr.’s office and see if they needed your service or how did you go about doing that?
I found my first transcription job on a bulletin board at a hospital. The job I have now I heard about from another mom who was looking to lighten her load of transcription jobs. She knew I did the same work and passed along the doctor’s name and number to me. However, I have heard of other transcriptionists going into doctor’s offices to inquire about transciption work. You never know, you might get lucky. You could start with your own doctors. Good luck!
this is very helpful. i’ve always wanted to work at home, i think it would be less hassle and more productive than staying in offices and work for other people. thanks for sharing!

My husband lost his job a few years ago and I was forced to go out and find something to help support the family. I ended up working from home and found something that I really love. There are many options for working from home – you just need to find something you like and are good at.
Pretty choices there, I think I belong to the VA work. Thank you so much for sharing some gritty works over the internet while at home! Kudos to you!

´s latest post: Varolo &8211 I WON the Jackpot!! You can too!
Hello! Can I just say – I am thoroughly enjoying your website! You are an inspiration!
I wanted to know if you have ever heard of Varolo? I signed up with them last summer – but didn’t really do anything with it till last week. I just found out last night I won the $575 weekly jackpot!! (this week it’s $600).
It’s a fairly new company that pays for people to watch commercial ads. I watched around 20 ads/day (for about 10 minutes) and it gave me over 140 entries into the jackpot, earned reward points (that can later be exchanged for gift cards or a few merchandise items), and I made a little money (on the ads a couple of my villagers watched). With more villagers – you can earn more money . . . plus you are entered into the jackpot with each ad watched.
I’m always skeptical and do a lot of research on things before diving in. Well – after winning the $575 last night – I am a firm believer!!
Varolo is rated A- with the BBB and has over 149,000 registered users (ie – more popular than coca-cola.com, pepsi.com and disneyland.com COMBINED!) and is growing quickly every day!
For more info on what it is – here is a link to a short video (there’s a longer, more thorough video link above it if someone wants to know more). http://www.varolo.com/village/loriwestrn@gmail.com
Here’s a link to the article on my win this week (so you know I’m telling the truth) – http://blog.varolo.com/featured/lori-west-varolo-jackpot-winner/
I thought you might like to add this to your list of work-from-home opportunities for your wonderful SAHM and working moms (and dads!).
Blessings!

Your suggestions for work from home careers are good. I personally can testify that an ecommerce website is very doable (and profitable) for the average person. Just pick a product line that you know something about and go to it.
Brilliant and very informative article. You have points and views that are really very important.
The Working House´s latest post: The Question of Why
I finally decided to read one of these articles in an internet
newsgroup describing how to make $50,000.00 in only one month from a $5.00 investment.
Of course I thought this was ridiculous ,or some type of pyramid. Im the type of person whos tried all online surveys and found out that it doesn’t work. But, hey, what’s $5.00.
Markus Valppu says he made $57,883 in four weeks. Dave Manning claims he made $53,664 in the same amount of time. Dan Shepstone says it was only $17,000 for him. Do I know these folks? No, but when I read how they say they did it, it made sense to me. Enough sense that I’m taking a similar chance with $5 of my own money. Not a big chance, I admit–but one with incredible potential, because $5 is all anyone ever invests in this system. Period. That’s all Markus, Dave, or Dan invested, yet their $5 netted them tens of thousands of dollars each, in a safe, legal, completely legitimate way.
Here’s how it works in 3 easy steps:
STEP 1. Invest your $5 by writing your name and address on five
separate pieces of paper along with the words: “PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR MAILING LIST.” (In this way, you’re not just sending a dollar to someone; you’re paying for a legitimate service.) Fold a $1 bill, money order, or bank note inside each paper, and mail them by standard U. S. Mail to the following five addresses:
1)- Heath Ward P.O.Box 2027 Dodge City, Ks 67801
2)- Matthew Kulbacki 1025 12th street Golden, CO, USA 80401
3)- Nikki Robinson 2324 Frederick Place Valdosta, GA 31602
4)- Ross O’Brien 1040 pine lane Lafayette,CA 94549
5)- Brooke Frieman 2451 N. Rainbow blvd. Unit 89108, Las Vegas, NV 89108
STEP 2. Now remove the top name from the list, and move the other names up. This way, #5 becomes #4 and so on. Put your name in as the fifth one on the list.
STEP 3. Post the article to at least 200 newsgroups. There are at least 17000 newsgroups at any given moment in time. Try posting to as many newsgroups as you can. Remember the more groups you post to, the more people will see your article and send you cash!
STEP 4. You are now in business for yourself, and should start seeing returns within 7 to 14 days! Remember, the internet is new and huge. There is no way you can lose.
Now here is how and why this system works: Out of every block of 200 posts I made, I got back 5 responses. Yes, that’s right, only 5. You make $5.00 in cash, not checks or money orders, but real cash with your name at #5. Each additional person who sent you $1.00 now also makes 200 additional postings with your name at #4, 1000 postings. On average then, 50 people will send you $1.00 with your name at #4,….$50.00 in your pocket! Now these 50 new people will make 200 postings each with your name at #3 or 10,000 postings. Average return, 500 people= $500. They make 200 postings each with your name at #2= 100,000 postings=5000 returns at $1.00 each=$5,000.00 in cash! Finally, 5,000 people make 200 postings each with your name at #1 and you get a return of $50,000 before your name drops off the list. And that’s only if everyone down the line makes only 200 postings each! Your total income for this one cycle is $55,000. From time to time when you see your name is no longer on the list, you take the latest posting you can find and start all over again. The end result depends on you. You must follow through and repost this article everywhere you can think of. The more postings you make, the more cash ends up in your mailbox. It’s too easy and too cheap to pass up!!!
You can’t be serious. This is called…I believe…chain emailing. In the US, chain letters, or email, that solicit money is illegal. What do you think we are, idiots? What a moron!
I would like to be a personal VA. I have been thinking about it for a few years. I used to run my own manufacturer’s rep business, and was on the road 4 days a week. I often wished I could pay someone to manage some of the personal stuff on my plate. My problem is how do I learn how to price services? Especially, how do you set pricing for services when you have no other pricing to match it against? Is there a source for that
i have read some of theses, i have always wanted to work form home and have be finding it hard to get started in something. i am looking into the copywriting and the virtual assistant. i am just looking for the best and fastest way to start. i am in South Africa. I have found others but to find out that these do not exsit. i really am looking to provied for my child. i have done data capturing before, would like to try my hand in new business things, such as copywriting.
I enjoy these ideas. I think they are things that most people can do but where would someone start if they were interested? For example, to be a copywriter does it require training or a certificate? Thanks for posting this, I hope there is a follow up to in the near future.

I’ve been distributing products for Nucerity International for the past 4 months and I love this company and it’s products!! It’s a great way to earn money from home and have great skin!! They have a highly patented night time roll on breathable mask. But find the right company and product for you…I’d love to have you join my team – South Hill Designs is a brand new company that just launched February 25th, 2013 – no monthly minimums, no waitlist, great support for their artists and a fun, quality product! Beautiful lockets that “tell your story” with charms, coins, screens and droplets!
